**ADDICTIONS COUNSELOR**

The counselor position will be.50 Addictions Counselor for KidsFirst families,.25 home visitor and.25 community education and development including group sessions.

This position provides assessment, counseling, referral and follow-up in relation to addictions issues of Kids First families. The counselor will work in collaboration with other addiction services and agencies in the community as well as work closely with KidsFirst Home Visitors to support the families they work with. The counselor will be required to work in a Team setting but also independently with mínimal supervision, offering services in non-traditional ways in non-clinical settings. The counselor will identify community resource requirements and systemic barriers to accessing services by KidsFirst families and work to bring about change.

**Qualifications**:

- Bachelor Degree in chemical dependency studies or another related field such as Social work or Human sciences as acceptable to the employer. Certificates and Diplomas in addictions field along with years of experience will be considered without a degree
- Ability to accurately assess addictions and or addiction related issues and make appropriate recovery plans and referrals using a strength-based approach
- Ability to role model for the Kids First families and promote positive life-style choices. Demonstrates personal commitment to a healthy lifestyle
- Knowledge of needs/risk assessment, crisis management, case management skills, and treatment strategies for high-risk families
- Knowledge of mental health and addictions theories and the ability to integrate these concepts into practice
- Trauma informed with knowledge and understanding of Indigenous family systems, residential school abuse and intergenerational impacts
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and basic computer skills
- Aboriginal language and ancestry would be an asset
- Complete accurate and timely case recordings and client records in a manner that ensures confidentiality
- Complete and maintain file records for workload analysis and statistical purposes
- A police security check, a driver's license abstract, operational vehicle and current driver's license is required

**Job Types**: Full-time, Fixed term contract
Contract length: 12 months
