**Main Purpose & Function**

The Adaptive Aquatic leader provides direction of adaptive aquatic programs and services at aquatic facilities. This position is instrumental in expanding City-wide adaptive aquatic programming, researching and developing new resources, training and developing adaptive aquatic instructional and support skills at each pool. The Adapted Aquatic Leader also supports aquatic staff throughout indoor pools in the delivery of adaptive aquatic programming.

The position builds and nurtures relationships with local organizations, which work with children, youth, and adults with disabilities in order to make programs relevant and accessible to those who would most benefit from it.

This position includes pool supervision, lifeguarding and supervisory work. The position also assists in preparing records, reports and statistics related to the work performed, schedules and supervises the work of auxiliary aquatic staff. The work involves instructing and evaluating children and adults in all levels of swimming including specialized areas of instruction, ensuring the safety of facility users, rendering first aid as required.

The Adapted Aquatic Leader is under the supervision of the Aquatic Supervisor and the guidance of the Access Services Programmer. Work is performed under general supervision and is evaluated by a superior in terms of effectiveness of instruction and conformance to established practices, and by the public in terms of services rendered. The position reports to the Assistant Supervisor, Indoor Aquatics (City-Wide Services) and works closely with the pool programming teams and Access Services staff.

**Specific Duties & Responsibilities**
- Assists in developing aquatic programs and services for all levels and abilities focussing on specialized programs such as programs for people with a disability; actively participates in swimming instruction.
- Occasional travel between sites to work with the site teams to facilitate learner registration
- Presents and instructs at in-service training at all pools to develop staff knowledge, skills and abilities in teaching adapted swimming lessons
- Schedules, assigns, supervises and assists in the evaluation of the work of employees engaged in providing swimming instruction, lifeguarding, custodial, and clerical services; organizes and leads staff in-service training
- Develops instructor knowledge tools and support documents
- Mentors swim instructors and offer lesson support
- Liaises with and support the Access Services team in matters of aquatics
- Assesses and develop appropriate lesson format (Private / Group) based on an assessment of the learner
- Follows up assessments of lesson results
- Communicates with families and individuals to coordinate lessons using a variety of communication methods and tools
- Communicates with students, families/caregivers and therapists to build an understanding and rapport with learners and their family/support teams
- Working with the Assistant Supervisor of Indoor Aquatics, develops and implements an equitable lesson distribution process
- Contacts successful applicants and provide registration support as required
- Compiles student profiles - based on all available feedback
- Conducts and trains staff in conducting in water assessments for new students
- Develops small group lessons based on swim ability and student compatibility
- Offers feedback to aquatic team members
- Liaises with local organizations that support adapted learning
- Conducts research on evolving best practices and instructional alternatives
- Plans, organizes and coordinates special aquatics, social and cultural activities and events.
- Assists in program planning.
- Develops promotional materials for program activities; maintains various operating and administrative records related to the work.
- Performs related work as required.
- Liaises with pool teams to determine lesson times and capacity

**Qualifications**

Education and Experience:

- Completion of high school supplemented by training courses related to the work and sound experience as a lifeguard and swim instructor, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
