- Oct 18, 2024**PURPOSE OF THE POSITION**

The Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) is a National Indigenous Organization representing the political voice of Indigenous women, girls, Two-Spirit, transgender, and gender-diverse people in Canada, inclusive of First Nations on and off reserve, status, and non-status, disenfranchised, Métis, and Inuit. NWAC was founded on the collective goal to enhance, promote, and foster the social, economic, cultural, and political well-being of Indigenous women, girls, Two-Spirit, transgender, and gender-diverse people within their respective communities and Canadian societies.

**SUMMARY**

The Policy Advisor will work under the supervision of the Director of Health and will assist in all aspects and will assist in all aspects of the development of NWAC’s health policies, political positions and related strategies including their implementation to support NWAC’s advocacy from both a national and international perspective.

**RESPONSIBILITIES**

The Policy Advisor will:

- Conduct research on Indigenous health and wellness.
- Provide evidence-based policy advice, policy and legislative analysis, support and recommendations to various stakeholders on Indigenous health and wellness, as appropriate.
- Ongoing stakeholder engagement and participation in relevant government and non-governmental advisory committees, working groups, engagement sessions and conferences.
- Engagement with IWG2STGD+ people to ensure their voices are included and inform research and policies.
- Developing research projects and/or partnerships to gather and disseminate evidence to inform policies and programs.
- Identify best-practices on culturally safe health and social services delivery, violence prevention, resiliency, healing and health promotion.
- Maintaining and building partnerships with relevant stakeholders including government, international and national organizations, Indigenous researchers, advocates and services providers.
- Supporting briefing to senior management and national President on health issues and providing policy recommendations.
- Ensuring research, policies, strategies and initiatives addressing the needs and priorities of IWG2STGD+ people are consistent with NWAC’s vision and mandate.
- Participation in Indigenous Committee and other relevant stakeholder engagement, meetings, input and presentations
- Other duties as required.

**EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE**
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., health sciences, public health, political science, law, public policy, social sciences) or equivalent experience.
- Master’s Degree is an asset;
- 1-2 years of experience in co-developing and implementing qualitative and quantitative research and presenting gathered information in various documents and reports especially in the health and/or policy sector. This is inclusive of surveys, focus groups, needs assessments, and interviews.
- 1-2 years of experience in stakeholder engagement, contributing to non-governmental advisory committees, working groups, and facilitating engagement sessions especially with Indigenous women and their communities.
- Strong understanding of the historical and contemporary issues faced by Indigenous WG2STGD+ people on Turtle Island and Inuit Nunangat, including the cultural and systemic impacts of health policies on these communities.
- Relevant experience working or volunteering with Indigenous peoples, groups, or organizations is an asset.

**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES**

Knowledge

The Policy Advisor must have proficient knowledge in the following areas:
a. Knowledge of or willingness to learn about the diverse cultures, histories, values, and traditions of Indigenous Peoples in Canada and internationally, with an appreciation for the realities, challenges, strengths, and opportunities faced by Indigenous women and their communities particularly in the context of health policy.

b. Expertise in health policy, including access to health services, mental health and substance use, chronic diseases, maternal and child health, housing and living conditions, food security and nutrition, health inequities, and social determinants of health.

c. Understanding of best practices for promoting and protecting Indigenous WG2STGD+ people’s rights, within the context of health policy.

d. Proficiency in leading research and analysis for health policy projects, with the ability to formulate and provide strategic recommendations
