**Duties and Responsibilities**:
The Animal Health Technician (AHT) reports directly to the Manager of Animal Care Operations in the department of Animal Care and Veterinary Services (ACVS). They participate in providing daily care and monitoring the well being of all research animals housed in the vivarium and satellite facilities on campus. They adhere to and follows the guidelines with respect to humane and ethical treatment of animals as specified by the CCAC and the Animals for Research Act (ARA) as well as facility Standard Operating Procedures

**Qualifications**:
The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:

- Knowledge of organisms that may affect lab animals, understanding modes of transmission, and methods of decontamination, sterilization, and prevention.
- Ability to prepare holding rooms and accept incoming animals, examine animals for general health upon receipt and placement, use observational skills to identify and record concerns for technical or veterinary intervention, and report health issues to the Veterinarian.
- Awareness of protocol-specific endpoints and use of sound judgment to ensure animals at endpoint are identified and reported immediately to the lab and the veterinarian.
- Ensure completion of daily husbandry activities, re-prioritize workload based on the needs of animals or the research community, and demonstrate flexibility in managing tasks.
- Good organizational and time management skills.
- Understanding of rodent colony management, including monitoring rodent pregnancies, weaning pups, and collecting/collating colony data for regulatory purposes.
- Awareness of ergonomic issues to ensure safe work habits and follow direction from the Manager or ASC regarding ergonomics.
- Ability to work effectively as a team member and independently on routine tasks, demonstrating reliability to support the animal care team’s performance.
- Exercise sound judgment, communicate effectively and respectfully, and provide competent and efficient animal care.
- Perform some administrative tasks and have computer experience with Excel and Word.

**Education and Experience**:
The above is normally acquired through the completion of:

- Completion of a 1 year Veterinary Assistant Program.
- Three years of related work experience. Preferably one of those years working in laboratory animal science or in an academic animal facility. Equivalencies in education and experience would be considered.
