This position oversees and performs scenic carpentry for specific projects, including fabrication and installation.
**ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION**
Elia Kirby Productions Ltd (EKP Ltd.) does business as the Great Northern Way Scene Shop
(GNW) and is an artistic services and fabrication company that builds custom sets, installations, and displays. With a diverse client-base that includes everyone from large institutions (e.g. Vancouver
Art Gallery) to small nonprofits (e.g. Pacific Theatre) to corporate companies (e.g. TED Talks,
Moment Factory, MEC), GNW operates year-round to produce an array of scenic projects. Located at the western edge of the False Creek Flats and within the Arts Factory building, the GNW Scene
Shop is dedicated to supporting Greater Vancouver's cultural community while providing employment to local artisans and craftspeople.
**ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS**
Reports to the Head Carpenters; takes direction from the Project Managers, and Project
Coordinators in the execution of specific projects; works in collaboration with other shop crew (eg:
Shop Manager, Heads of all departments, Scenic Painters, and other Scenic Carpenters).
**WORK PERFORMED**
Scenic Carpenters serve the fabrication & construction needs of the company, as well as provide assistance with installations and strikes, as required. A Lead Scenic Carpenter:
- Uses woodworking and carpentry tools and equipment according to build and manufacture approved designs and projects
- Performs mathematical calculations in the construction of scenic elements
- Reads and consults plans and blueprints with the ability to estimate time and materials required
- To work in accordance with shop safety procedures to lay-out, assemble and construct scenic elements
- Loads and unloads scenery to and from the shop, trucks, theatres, venues, and warehouses.
- Installs and strikes scenic elements at various job locations
- Cleans up the scene shop and work areas throughout and at the end of the work day
**SUPERVISION RECEIVED**
Works under the supervision of the Head Carpenters and from Project Managers and Project
Coordinators. Sometimes required to work unsupervised; and may be required to supervise others in the course of completing a project.
**SUPERVISION GIVEN**
Occasionally required to supervise scenic helpers and specialty labourer/grips in the execution of project builds and to maintain operational and safety guidelines.
**EXERCISING JUDGMENT/IMPACT OF DECISIONS**
Incumbent is responsible for observing and executing safe production practices at the main and off-site locations. The consequences of errors include, but are not limited to: EKP Ltd and client projects could run at a serious resource and financial deficit, and the staff and production personnel may be seriously injured in unsafe working conditions, seriously compromising the organization's ability to operate.
**WORKING CONDITIONS**
GNW is currently located at 281 Industrial Avenue in Vancouver, BC. Off-site work mainly takes place at various locations throughout Metro Vancouver. Working conditions include, but are not limited to, working at heights on scaffolding and/or on a ladder, and/or in a high-reach (aerial lift); fumes or airborne particles requiring the use of a respirator; working with or around paint/solvents/aerosols (e.g. spray paints); using a motorized company vehicle or a leased or personal vehicle for company business; working in conditions that may be wet, humid, and extremely hot or cold; using a forklift (sit down); working with or near compressed gas cylinders or tanks; working with or near toxic or caustic chemicals, hazardous chemicals, fluorescent lamps or batteries. Exposure to loud noise levels. Outdoor weather conditions include direct sunlight, wind, and precipitation.
**QUALIFICATIONS**
- High school graduation with a minimum of 5 years professional carpentry experience
- Strong working practice as a scenic carpenter and associated skills and methods
- Prior experience in the reading and understanding of blueprints and working drawings, including AutoCAD and VectorWorks; must be able to perform geometrical and arithmetical calculations
- Proficient in the use of saws, drills, staplers, pneumatic tools, hand and power tools, tape measures, and other woodworking tools
- Knowledge of best practices in the entertainment industry, and procedures relating to those standards and practices
- Current understanding and knowledge of safety practices in the entertainment field
- Must be able to perform well under pressure and adapt to a fast-changing environment
- Capable of lifting heavy weights and the stamina, fortitude, flexibility and ability to cope with long hours in noisy, dusty environments
- Understanding of theatre, film, and live events
- Ability to take direction well and to work without supervision.
