**Academic Appeals Coordinator/Advisor**:
**Primary Purpose**: The Academic Appeals Coordinator/Advisor plays a critical role in the drive to support the academic success and overall experience of students in the College of Arts and Science. They coordinate and assess student academic appeals and Deferred Exams in the College, and they are responsible for chairing the College of Arts and Science Academic Appeals Committee. They also provide academic advising, coaching, and administrative support to students, and in doing so, they enhance retention, persistence, and graduation rates.
**Nature of Work**:The Academic Appeals Coordinator/Advisor will implement and maintain the policies, procedures, and protocols of the University of Saskatchewan in general, and the College of Arts and Science in particular. In the course of advising and coaching students, they will evaluate student academic records, explore academic options and alternatives, coach students to develop strategies for academic success, and monitor student progress.
The Academic Appeals Coordinator/Advisor is a member of the Undergraduate Student Office (UGSO) and contributes to the wider work of the UGSO, which includes deferred exam requests, graduation checks, transfer credit assessment, reviews of academic appeals, convocation processing, and promotion and recruitment activities.
The Academic Appeals Coordinator/Advisor reports to the Manager of Undergraduate Academic Policies and Outreach. They may be asked to provide the Manager with guidance, expert counsel, and analysis of issues that have a direct impact on the unit or on student success.
The Academic Appeals Coordinator/Advisor has daily contact with students, staff, and many other on-campus and off-campus service providers. They will regularly deal with highly sensitive and confidential matters and must demonstrate effective decision-making and sound judgment while following established procedures and guidelines. It is imperative that the Academic Appeals Coordinator/Advisor work effectively in a team environment, giving and receiving advice and support in a timely, open, and forthcoming manner.
**Accountabilities**:
- Advises students about the requirements of academic appeals in response to faculty actions, and in relation to requests for retroactive withdrawals;
- Advises the Manager of Undergraduate Academic Policies and Outreach and Academic Appeals Committee if questions arise about individual appeals;
- Corresponds with students throughout the academic appeals process;
- Summarizes outcomes of academic appeal review, and communicates the results to students in a respectful and timely manner;
- Regularly assesses the academic appeals process with attention to accessibility and transparency for students and advisors;
- Advises students of the requirements of Deferred Exams, processes deferred exam requests and communicates the results of the request to students;
- Provides one-on-one advising to students;
- Interprets and communicates degree regulations and requirements, and academic policies of the College of Arts and Science;
- Assists students with admissions, course selection, major selection, prerequisite checking, course registration and withdrawal, and funding information;
- Provides support to students as they transition into the USask learning environment;
- Helps students to develop a plan of action for academic success and degree completion;
- Helps students to identify and understand their own aspirations and aptitudes as they connect their degree to their career goals;
- Assists students in identifying and addressing barriers that hinder their academic success;
- Works closely with other student support specialists at the University of Saskatchewan and initiates strategic referrals for students who require additional supports;
- Understands and abides by confidentiality practices;
- Ensures that accurate meeting records are maintained;
- Other duties as assigned.
**Qualifications**
**Education**: Completion of an undergraduate degree is required. A Bachelor’s degree in an Arts & Science discipline is preferred.
