**Major Responsibilities**:

- Performs construction and maintenance work on concrete, steel and wooden bridges. Uses a variety of hand and power tools, and related equipment.
- Makes repairs to bridges. Cleans and paints steel bridges. Safeguards bridges during flood conditions.
- Performs skilled and semi-skilled work not requiring the services of a licensed tradeworker.
- Performs annual nonstructural inspections of bridges, culverts, retaining walls, guide rail systems and post and cable and documents inspections reports, including supporting photographs, within the district(s).
- Reads, understands and interprets plans and utility drawings.
- Operates equipment such as dump trucks, trailers, pickup trucks with attachments, salt trucks and salt spreaders, snow blowers, snoopers, cherry pickers, front end loader, chain saws/concrete saws, aerial work platforms, skid steer including attachments, rubber tire loader including attachment, fork lift, trailer under 4600 kg and crane under 7200 kg, boom truck, etc. Maintains equipment and vehicles on a daily basis and makes minor repairs, as required.
- May be required to perform maintenance work on subways such as washing and sandblasting walls, concrete, replacing metal canopies, etc.
- Loads concrete, asphalt, debris, etc. into truck.
- Marks designated areas for repair/construction on roads, structures, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, maintenance appurtenances.
- Repairs and replaces handrails, guiderails, metal and wooden fences/railings, steps and stringers, catwalk, catch basins, brick walkways; greases and oils expansion bearings on steel bridges; cleans out expansion joints, removes blockages in drainage pipes and catch basins.
- Repairs wash outs/bridge scours by replacing soil and consolidating.
- Abates graffiti with cement slurry or other methodologies.
- Performs traffic control duties, lays out and installs bollard systems on the City Right of Way and lays out/pins curb stones on boulevards to prevent parking.
- Performs snow removal operations on and around bridges utilizing mechanical snow removal equipment.
- Performs data entry. Prepares and updates electronic logs using various equipment such as computers, field tablets and the supporting operating software (e.g. TMMS, EWMS, Maximo).
- Completes daily reports such as pre-trip inspection reports, driver’s collision/incident reports.
- Attends at claims and service requests.
- Liaises with utility companies, contractors and other agencies.
- Performs assorted shop duties.
- Provides work direction and training to other staff, when required.

**Key Qualifications**:

- Experience in the repair of bridges and the use of asphalt, concrete, including placement and finish.
- Experience in rigging scaffolding and working from ladders and staging over open spaces at varying heights.
- Experience in sandblasting, structural framework, carpentry, welding including oxy-acetylene, arc, mig, and plasma cutting.
- Must possess and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario, Class “D” Driver’s License with “Z” endorsement and must have or qualify for the City’s assigned vehicle(s) and equipment(s) operating permits and requirements.

**You must also have**:

- Ability to orient new staff on assigned vehicles/equipment.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to use or learn to use various technical devices related to the position.
- Ability to work in a safe, efficient manner, and deal courteously with the public.
- Ability to maintain Standard First Aid and CPR certifications.
- Ability to plan, prioritize, organize and work independently.
- Ability to work a rotating shift, /weekend/overtime/on call duty, extended hours as required and in inclement weather/road conditions during weekdays, weekends and statutory holidays in conformance with the Collective Agreement.
- Ability to cut, bend and place reinforcing steel for concrete work on bridges, and culverts.
- Ability to prepare and keep files of reports and records.
- Knowledge of and ability to perform minor maintenance on equipment and to maintain equipment/vehicle in a clean, tidy and safe condition.
