R&d Technician

The R&D Technician reports directly to the VP- R&D and QA and assists throughout the product development process.

**Description of Duties and Responsibilities**
- Liaise with Production Manager, team leaders and R&D Director to arrange upcoming samples to be made and sent to customers;
- Participate in project meetings
- Write technical/scientific documentation and monitor reports
- Conduct project planning and communication of project status on a regular basis
- Co-ordinate project activities to ensure that new project(s) are delivered on time
- Ensure compliance with Health and Safety procedures
- Communicate with Team Leaders/Supervisors regarding samples needed and assisting sales department with gathering or creating samples
- Conduct product tests involving test specific sensory evaluation and follow through with plant trials.
- Record daily shelf life of plant trials
- Manage lab environment (sanitization and organization)
- Participate in SR/Ed program
- Monitor ‘new ingredients’ inventory for plant trials and coordinate with purchasing agent to order from suppliers once ingredient is proven satisfactory
- Record weights, settings and packaging specifications of new products on all production lines to establish final product specifications
- Understand HACCP and BRC regulations to ensure quality of product being produced
- Participate as a member of the HACCP & BRC team and maintain all related documents
- Trouble shoot for new and existing products
- Train team members and supervise on all lines while ensuring best practices are followed when introducing new or existing changes with products
- Arrange R&D samples to be made and sent to customers
- Seek new opportunities to reduce costs, suggest equipment modifications and processes to create new products and improve efficiencies
- Complete any other job duties or projects that may arise from time to time
- Must be trained on 1) the sources of gluten (wheat, rye, barley, spelt, kamut and related grains), 2) the risk associated with gluten cross contamination and its impact on those with celiac disease; and 3) how to report instances of suspected contamination.

**Skill and Experience Requirements**
- A college diploma or university degree in food science or related field
- Strong interpersonal and team building skills
- Professional written and oral communication
- Knowledge of commonly used concepts and procedures in the bakery industry (preferred)
- Problem solving skills with independent judgment
- Obvious enthusiasm, initiative and pride in work

**Working Conditions**

- Be able to work in a standing position for entire shift

- Mostly day shift with some evening/nights and weekends when required. Must have flexibility with start/end times.

**Job Types**: Full-time, Fixed term contract
Contract length: 12 months
