The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation is responsible for the policies, legislation, regulations, programs, and services that enable Alberta’s agriculture and food sectors to flourish and contribute to Alberta’s economic recovery and growth. Our work locations range from office to forest to fixed/rotary wing flights, lakes and rivers, the diversity of which presents high risk activities for staff at times.

As the Operations and Maintenance Team Lead for the Calgary area, you will be responsible for major water infrastructure projects that include river diversions, river weirs, embankment canals and dams, large hydraulic structures including canal check/drops and spillways, and complex data acquisition and controls systems. You will manage these water infrastructure projects in a team setting by implementing normal operating plans, flood/drought action plans, and emergency preparedness plans to ensure effective, consistent, safe operations that mitigates the impact of drought or flood conditions and provides safe and secure water supplies to stakeholders including Irrigation Districts, private irrigators, municipalities, industry and recreational users.
The Team Lead position provides leadership to a team of operations and maintenance staff and contractors and includes planning and implementing day-to-day inspections, operation and maintenance activities, coordinating staff resources, and monitoring staff performance. This position is also required to contribute to engineering investigations to diagnose mechanical, structural or hydraulic issues and jointly develop plans for repair or capital rehabilitation.
Another key area of focus is actively building relationships with external agencies, Local Authorities, Irrigation Districts, other departments and the general public in the region as it relates to the management of water resources. This position also plays a key leadership role in delivery of the Bow Operations OH&S program.

- A 2-year diploma from an accredited institution in Engineering Technology, Water Resources, or a closely related discipline.
- A minimum of 7 years of experience with hands-on operation, maintenance, and rehabilitation of water management infrastructure (dams, canals and hydraulic structures) is required.
- A valid class 5 driver’s license or equivalent
**Equivalencies**:
- Equivalent related experience with other large civil/mechanical infrastructure projects may be considered
- One year of experience for one year of education, or one year of education for one year of experience
**Additional Assets**
- Education at the Bachelor Degree level in Engineering Technology, Water Resources, Applied Sciences or closely-related discipline will be preferred.
- Previous demonstrated experience with supervision of staff, and stakeholder collaboration.
