**Posting Details: Hours are flexible A approx 2 hours a day from 9am - 8pm.**

**A day in the life of a Friendly Visitor**
- At a time that works for your schedule, you will visit with Residents who are isolated, connecting with them to hear stories, and engage in programs. You may connect with a Resident with whom you have a common passion, or hobby. While visiting you will take and record each resident temperature.

**Responsibilities and Duties**:

- You will interact and build relationships with different residents, supporting their individual goals, such as:

- going for a walk inside or outside of the Residence
- friendly conversations in the pub
- listening to music together
- reminiscing and sharing stories
- attending programs with Residents who need more support
- helping with technology needs

You will record/ share the planned interactions with the Life Enrichment Coordinator:

- How did you spend your time interacting? (Talking, doing a specific activity, walking, etc.)
- What was the engagement level of the resident
- when you arrived, and when the visit was completed
- What worked well to engage them, what didn’t
- Any concerns or areas for the team to follow up on with the Resident.

**Qualifications**:
As a friendly visitor you demonstrate the following qualities:

- Passion for seniors
- Patience and excellent listening skills
- Good verbal communication in English (or other language as required)
- Ability to maintain and protect confidentiality of the personal information of the Residents
- Interest in getting to know their personal stories and experiences
- Flexibility
- each visit may look different based on the interest of the Residents that day
- Each volunteer is required to provide:

- A Vulnerable Sector Screening from the Police/ RCMP
- A clear TB test
- Each Volunteer is required to provide proof of Covid 19 vaccination or proof of exception
- COVID 19 Protocols:

- All volunteers will follow COVID 19 protocols in the Residence in alignment with the Team Member strategy (may include masking, hand hygiene training, etc.)

**Preferred Experience**:

- Experience spending time with seniors (family members, community members, etc.)

**Commitment Expected**:
Each volunteer has commitments we are happy to work around, provided it meets the needs of the Residents we serve. Being a friendly visitor requires you to build relationships and get to know the Residents as a friend
- the most successful friendly visitors, visit consistently, so the Residents can get excited about when to expect them.

Recommended frequency and duration at a minimum for this position:

- Frequency
- once per week or more frequently
- Duration
- at least 1 hour per visit, ideally minimum of 100 hours

**Training**:

- We support a vulnerable group of seniors, and as such you may be asked to complete a training process that includes:

- 5 hours of online training including
- ** Behaviour management**:

- what to do if you see a Resident experiencing a behavior
- ** Emergency Preparedness**:

- should there be an emergency when you are onsite
- ** Supporting Residents with Cognitive Aging-** Our Residents are all at different places in their aging experience, and some need additional support. We have modules to help you learn how to support and get comfortable with interacting with Residents who may be more forgetful or need more prompting.
- Support from our Life Enrichment Coordinator and Team
- Each LEC helps to guide and support Friendly Visitors, in ensuring we are you with those who will benefit most from your visit
- Training around how to use resources available to interact one on one
- Activity Kits available, other resources such as music, etc.- Regular touch bases to make sure you have what you need, get your feedback and recommendations.
- Residence Orientation
- To help you understand building and the different areas that may benefit your visits and encourage your Resident to spend time not only in their suite but interacting with other Residents as well.
