Canada West Veterinary Specialists is an exciting multi-disciplinary specialty referral practice with a dedicated 24-hour ERCC service. We are a certified Level II Veterinary Trauma center as designated per the Veterinary Committee on Trauma (VetCOT). We have 6 specialty departments, including Oncology, Neurology, Diagnostic imaging, Surgery and, Internal Medicine with added services of Rehabilitation therapy and an in-house lab.

The surgery consultation assistant primarily supports veterinarians during patient consultations by preparing medical records, assisting with physical exams, preparing estimates, and providing information to clients. They are a vital point of contact between pet owners and the veterinary team, ensuring clear communication and an excellent experience for both. When not participating in the patient consultation process, the assistant will be able to support other areas of the surgery department such as with the patient discharge process and other duties.
**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Prepare animals for examination by gathering medical history, collecting vitals, and assisting with restraining pets during exams as needed.
- Aid the veterinarian during consultations, including preparing equipment, and helping with procedures when necessary.
- Handle administrative duties such as scheduling appointments, preparing medical records and surgical procedure estimates, and client callbacks.
- Responsible for liaising with Surgery Coordinator for patients that are admitted into the hospital for procedures following consultation.
- Dispenses medications at the direction of the attending veterinarian.
- Maintaining clean and stocked exam rooms.
- Other duties may include (when not participating with patient consultations), involvement in the patient discharge process and other needs of the surgical department.
- As a member of the overall CWVS team, you may be required to assist in other areas of the hospital should the need arise.
**KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES**
- Strong verbal communication skills to interact with clients and the veterinary team.
- Ability to empathize with and reassure pet owners and handle anxious or distressed clients
- Comfort and experience with handling animals of different sizes and temperaments.
- A basic understanding of all procedures performed, and basic instruments used within the surgical service, as well as the ability to use all equipment safely and effectively.
- A strong knowledge and understanding of normal vital parameters, and the ability to recognize changes and/or abnormalities.
- Strong desire to learn and excel within the profession.
- Ability to recognize and establish priorities within the surgery service.
- Demonstrated computer and phone skills.
- High level of professionalism.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to work with little or no supervision when necessary.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
**QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE**
- Graduate of an accredited program for Veterinary Assistants or equivalent experience preferred.
- Customer service experience is an asset.
**WORKING HOURS**
- Monday - Thursday, 08:00 - 18:30 OR Tuesday - Thursday, 08:00 - 18:30
**Job Types**: Full-time, Part-time, Permanent
Pay: From $22.00 per hour
Expected hours: 30 - 40 per week
