Ottawa, Canada The Nature Conservancy of Canada Full time

The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is Canada’s leading private land conservation organization. Since 1962, NCC has helped conserve over 15 million hectares, coast to coast to coast. The Weston Family Conservation Science Fellowship Program supports and trains graduate students conducting NCC priority research so that they can become next-generation leaders in applied conservation science. Research by Fellows supports the conservation and management of important natural areas and biodiversity across Canada. Learn more about the program on our Fellowship Program webpage.

**Project summary**

Invasive species are one of the major threats to biodiversity in Canada, and globally. It can be challenging to identify where and under what circumstances landscapes will be most susceptible versus resistant to invasive species; not having this information can hamper conservation efforts. The objective of this master’s project is to model and map current and future invasive plant species distributions and spread in Canada in relation to landscape connectivity and/or climate change. This will allow for the forecasting of the future burden of invasive plants to resident communities in light of the multiple facets of global change. The project’s results will be useful for determining where conservation actions should be targeted to sustain resilient landscapes. Some field work may be required to validate models.

The student will be based at Carleton University and co-supervised by Drs. Emma Hudgins and Joe Bennett and (Carleton University) and Dr. Richard Schuster (NCC and Carleton University). They will interact with other NCC staff, including from the Weston Family Science Program.

**Fellowship details**

Interaction with NCC staff and other Fellows is core to the program, including discussion, feedback and peer-to-peer learning. This helps ensure that conservation efforts by NCC and partners benefit from the best available evidence, as well as enabling Fellows to learn about conservation practice and the non-profit sector, develop career-related skills and build their professional network.

**Fellowship requirements**

Essential qualifications are a bachelor’s degree in biology, natural resource management, botany, geography, forestry or a related field; strong demonstrated interest in and knowledge of ecology and conservation; a keen interest in developing skills in ecological modelling and GIS; Canadian citizenship or permanent residency (international students are not eligible for this Fellowship); and meeting the minimum graduate admissions criteria for Carleton University Biology Department. Experience in quantitative and/or computational skills is an asset.

**Diversity, equity and inclusion**

**How to apply**

The Weston Family Conservation Science Fellowship Program is made possible through the generous support of the Weston Family Foundation.
