Seniors’ Services is a division of Community Services at the Region of Waterloo. We collaborate with the community to plan, support and operate long-term care, residential and community programs in Waterloo Region.

**The Opportunity**:
As Assistant Manager of Care (Sunnyside Home) you will supervise the delivery of nursing services/care in the resident care unit in the long-term care home. You will have the responsibility of ensuring the delivery of person-centred care that maximizes residents’ independence and supports their physical and emotional well-being. You will supervise an interdisciplinary team in a 24/7 environment, with a focus on customer service and a restorative care philosophy.

You will supervise an interdisciplinary team including Team Leaders, Registered Nurses, Registered Practical Nurses, and Personal Support Workers. You will support Team Leaders in coordinating, assigning, and performance monitoring the team.
You will supervise day-to-day administration of resident care services, audit to ensure accuracy of resident health records and documentation practices, including RAI observation in client care documentation system.
You will coordinate planning and replacement of staff to ensure coverage, you will check, approve, and input payroll submissions.
You will use your knowledge and expertise to participate in clinical programs (e.g., continence management, medical equipment uses, skin care).
You will provide staff training in the use of lifts, transfers, and related equipment. Works with the Education Coordinator to ensure staff orientation and annual education requirements are met. You will participate in providing education programs for the unit.
You will ensure infection control procedures are maintained with the staff education and infection control staff and provide backup for infection control coordination and student placements.
You will assist the Manager in planning staff workload, develop time schedules for resident care staff and promote a team environment between units and staff.
You will participate in the administration of resident care services and contribute to short
- and long-term planning. You will conduct needs assessments, recommend, and assist in developing in-service programs, monitoring staff attendance, and adapt programs.
You will ensure staff follow procedures for handling and control of medications, including narcotic and control drugs. You will review medication incidents and follow up with staff and liaise with pharmacy to ensure service delivery.
You will investigate family, resident, and volunteer complaints, and take corrective actions. You will involve authorities when staff rights are violated and collaborate with Labour Relations.
You will collaborate with HR regarding individualized staff return to work plans, early intervention, injury prevention, insurance claims, and hiring of new staff.
You will participate on external committees and belong to professional organizations. You will collaborate with external agencies, care centres, hospices, hospitals, public health, educational institutions) for patient care.
You will administer contracts for products and services.
You will provide input into the resident care budget, monitor expenditures, and inform the Manager of potential over-expenditure.
You will liaise with divisional staff, exchanging information regarding resident care, assisting with pharmacist narcotic destruction and delivery procedures. You will have contact with other long term care homes and hospitals for admissions, referrals, and networking.
Backs up the Manager as required.
Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge of resident care and gerontological nursing, psychogeriatric and palliative care, long term care, recreational and physical therapy, and community resources, acquired through of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing, or equivalent education in the Health Sciences disciplines, plus related experience.
