Literacy and Numeracy Coach

Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) is a unique Indigenous Institute, recognized by community, government, and institutions of higher learning, as a Centre of Excellence for Indigenous Knowledge. SNP offers postsecondary, secondary, trades education and training. SNP has formal partnerships with nine publicly funded Ontario Universities and Colleges and collaborates with six Ontario-based Indigenous owned and controlled post-secondary Institutes.
At the SNP-STEAM ACADEMY, students earn a high school diploma, an industry-recognized college diploma, and gain relevant work experience in their field of study. The school creates a seamless program for students to acquire the academic, technical, and workplace skills and knowledge that employers need.
**Function & Overview**
Under the supervision of the Principal, The Literacy and Numeracy Coach plays a vital role in the student community of SNP STEAM Academy and will be responsible for assisting with the improvement of literacy and numeracy skills within the SNP STEAM Academy student body.
**Duties**
The duties of the Literacy and Numeracy Coach include, without limitation:
**Planning, Developing & Organizing Instruction**
- Communicating frequently with teachers to help identify students in need of one-on-one or group assistance in Math or English;
- Training, coaching, modeling, and assisting teachers in the areas of English and Math in the classroom to improve student achievement;
- Assisting teachers with classroom organization and learning activities that support learning targets and objectives;
- Conducting workshops for students who require further assistance;
- Participating and observing the planning process and the instruction that follows; and providing supportive and specific feedback and suggestions;
**Collaboration & Communication**
- Collaborating regularly with teachers and administration to address areas of key educational skills, identify problems areas and develop strategies to correct any issues;
- Analyzing data to determine benchmarks, establish goals, and monitoring literacy and numeracy achievement on a case-by-case and classroom basis to address identified needs;
- Assisting teachers in developing various formative assessments;
**Record Management and Confidentiality**
- Developing and conducting professional development presentations for teachers regarding instructional strategies, best practices, and specific instructional topics at school;
- Compiling detailed records relating to all aspects of the position including a coaching log with dates, times, and description of event; and
- Maintaining confidentiality with all staff and students.
**Qualifications**
**Education and Experience**
- Current member of the Ontario College of Teachers and in good standing;
- 3-5 years of teaching experience with demonstrated success in the areas of secondary English and Math; and
- Additional qualifications in reading and math (reading specialist and/or math specialist preferred).
**Knowledge, Skills & Abilities**
- A general and current knowledge of Hodinǫshǫ:nih history, culture, values, contemporary issues, community priorities, and stakeholders;
- Ability to utilize and communicate process;
- Must possess effective instructional delivery techniques and the ability to guide and train teachers in effective techniques and strategies;
- Excellent communication skills with an emphasis on written expression (i.e., faultless spelling and grammar, and professional style);
- Sound interpersonal skills including communication, organization, negotiation, confidentiality, and professional judgement;
- Ability to work under pressure and manage schedules, portfolios, and timelines, to meet demanding deadlines;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers, administrators, and students;
- Capacity to work both independently and in a team setting, demonstrating Hodinǫshǫ:nih/Rotinonhson:ni values of Ga’nigohi:yo:/Kanikoriio (Respect and the Good Mind);
- Understanding and appreciation of, and willingness to support the unique philosophy, vision, and mission of Six Nations Polytechnic, Inc.
**Work Requirements**
Work is performed under mínimal supervision in both an office and classroom setting with a diverse adolescent student population.
**Criminal Record Check**
The Literacy and Numeracy Coach will be required to provide an original Criminal Background Check - Vulnerable Sector Screening that is satisfactory to the employer prior to the first day of work at the SNP STEAM Academy, and an Offence Declaration that is satisfactory to the EMPLOYER by August 31st of every second year in which they are employed by Six Nations Polytechnic.
