Strathcona County is seeking a strategic leader to oversee our Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) programs. As Manager, Occupational Health & Safety, you will champion a culture of safety and well-being, ensuring compliance with legislation and driving continuous improvement across the organization.
This is a key leadership role within Human Resources, responsible for developing policies, leading health monitoring programs, and integrating safety into our organizational strategies.
**Key Responsibilities**:
- Lead the strategic development, implementation and evaluation of OHS programs and services, focusing on proactive hazard identification and incident prevention.
- Coordinate resources to support compliance with OHS legislation and mitigate risk to the County
- Develop plans to strategically address current and ongoing changes in the legislative environment pertaining to health and safety
- Lead the development, maintenance and implementation of OHS audit mechanisms to sustain the County’s Certificate of Recognition (COR) under the Partnership in Injury Reduction (PIR) program
- Lead the design and delivery of health and safety training that builds employee awareness, skills, and responsibility for hazard identification and risk mitigation
- Support the establishment, training, and operation of health and safety committees, including the mandatory Joint Worksite Health and Safety Committee reporting to Executive Team and the Chief Administrative Officer
- Ensure the County meets its requirements for provincial OHS and WCB reporting
- Oversee the design and implementation of the Vehicle Safety Program and health monitoring programs and manage related contract service providers
- Collaborate with Disability Management and Well-Being to develop, implement and evaluate health, safety and well-being programs and strategies
- Partner with HR leadership and other departments to integrate occupational health considerations into broader health, safety, and well-being strategies
- Contribute to the identification, development and implementation of improvement and strategic initiativesActively lead and participate in a variety of corporate projects, initiatives, HR programs and services to influence strategic HR goals and priorities
**Qualifications and Skills**:
- Bachelor’s Degree with a focus in Human Resource Management or a related area, with a minimum of 10 years of directly related senior work experience in health and safety, policy and program development and project management
- A minimum of five years of leadership experience is required
- Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation is preferred
- Experience in researching, drafting and maintaining HR policies, guidelines, workplace practices and processes as well as managing related projects
- Preference for public sector experience working with multiple employee groups (unionized and non-unionized)
- Strong theoretical and hands-on knowledge of health and safety practices with a comprehensive understanding of safety legislation, contract interpretation and contract management
- Excellent interpersonal skills with a solution-oriented focus and the ability to develop productive relationships with all levels of management, employees and union representatives
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to guide teams and cross-departmental groups to achieve organizational goals
- Strategic, critical thinking and analytical skills, with the ability to analyze information, consider risks and recommend a course of action consistent with business and strategic plans
- Ability to work under pressure, manage a variety of projects simultaneously and within deadlines
- Excellent communication and presentation skills to clearly and concisely present recommendations and supporting analysis to senior leadershipAbility to handle confidential information with integrity and professionalism
- **Conditions of Employment**:
- Class 5 Alberta vehicle operator’s license and ability to provide own transportation and meet insurance requirements
