**DIRECTOR, COMMUNICATIONS**
**GENERAL DESCRIPTION**
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director, Communications is responsible for the planning, development and implementation of all communications plans and strategies for Alberta’s Industrial Heartland Association (AIHA). This includes marketing campaigns, media relations, community engagement, value proposition marketing, event management and digital strategy development. The incumbent will demonstrate strong personal initiative and will utilize best practice communications tools and tactics to advance and elevate AIHA’s brand, reputation and positive image through targeted and meaningful strategic activities and specific audience management. Working as a senior member of the leadership team, the Director, Communications supports AIHA’s investment attraction and government relations activities and cultivates and expands the region’s social license through collaboration and strong partnerships.
**RESPONSIBILITIES**
The Director, Communications will work as part of a senior leadership team to promote Alberta’s Industrial Heartland as a world-class location for diversified capital investments. Responsibilities include planning and deploying best practices to build public awareness regionally, nationally, and internationally, and advancing and elevating the region’s environmental, social and governance profile.
The individual will possess a proven understanding of effective communications and engagement strategies, modern communications tools and tactics and is capable of creating and executing the Association’s annual communications strategies. The position is ideally suited for an experienced and well-connected individual who is familiar with non-profit and board governance, international marketing, media relations, event management, and can provide strategic leadership in public engagement.
Specific responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
- Advance and elevate AIHA’s brand, reputation, and positive image through targeted and meaningful strategic communication activities and specific audience engagement.
- Build, sustain, and foster collaborative relationships with partner organizations to advance aligned communications messaging and goals.
- Develop and execute AIHA’s annual communications and marketing plans relative to business development, government relations, and external relations.
- Manage and execute a broad scope of advertising activities, including regional, national and international marketing campaigns.
- Manage all online assets, including websites, social media, and digital tools.
- Develop and implement a robust media relations strategy including developing press releases and media announcements and responding to media inquiries.
- Coordinate all marketing and brand-building materials including corporate reporting, speech writing, script writing, electronic communications, presentations, and print material development.
- Oversee multiple budgets and financial forecasting.
- Lead community engagement activities.
- Represent AIHA at regional, national and international events, meetings, and on committees.
- Manage AIHA’s major events, including program development, contract negotiations and management, promotion, budgeting, measurement, and personnel management.
**QUALIFICATIONS**
- Related university or college degree
- Minimum of 10 years experience in communications or public relations
- Superior written and oral communications skills
- Extensive events coordination and planning experience
- Strong understanding of communications, marketing and community engagement best practices
- Developed ability to conduct critical thinking and analysis
- Self-starter with experience executing strategic priorities
- Experience presenting ideas, building consensus and advancing professional relationships
- Ability to work independently in an office environment
- Experience, contacts and working relationships in the Alberta’s Industrial Heartland region and local communities are an asset
- An understanding of the energy and petrochemical sectors is an asset.
