Greater Sudbury, Canada Vianet Full time

**POSITION TITLE**:System Administrator

**LOCATION**:Sudbury, ON

**REPORTS TO**:NOC Manager / Programming Manager

**SUMMARY**:
Vianet is seeking a skilled system administrator to work within the Systems Administration department as part of a team of IT professionals dedicated to the design and ongoing operation of Vianet’s high availability server infrastructure.

**SCHEDULE DETAILS**:
During the probationary period, this position will feature a 40-hour work week from Monday to Friday to ensure overlap with existing systems administrators for ongoing training opportunities and collaboration. After probation is completed, the scheduled hours may change to provide offset coverage with peers. Schedule will include availability for after-hours emergency calls.

**WORK LOCATION DETAILS**:
With the need to interface physically with server hardware, this position is office based. If training goes well, there may be opportunities to occasionally work from home. This position is open to individuals either currently working at, or are willing to relocate to our Sudbury location.

**JOB DETAILS**:
We use Linux virtually everywhere, so experience with this family of operating systems (specifically Debian based) is a must.

**Some mandatory requirements are**:

- Minimum 2 years experience as a Linux server admin in a service provider or enterprise environment supporting multiple servers, services and end users.
- You should know where Linux configuration files are stored, where custom system-level scripts go, how to add a binary to a standard user's path, add/remove users, change network interfaces and understand the Linux Filesystem Hierarchy standard.
- You should be experienced with ifupdown (the default network management package on Debian) and know how to configure network routes using this or other tools.
- You should have some basic familiarity with configuring various services such as sshd, Postfix, iptables, and sudoers as well as writing systemd unit files (sockets, mounts, services, etc.).
- Previous experience with Proxmox (or virtualization in general and the ability to learn), iSCSI, and ZFS are mandatory.
- Previous experience with server storage management; ZFS, hardware RAID, mdadm are highly recommended.
- Networking experience: you will be working with servers connected to switches and routers. Understanding what a broadcast domain is, a sub-interface, and what VLANs are is mandatory.
- Must be willing to respond to on-call after hours requests in the event of emergencies.

**Additional skillsets that would be positives include**:

- Scripting knowledge will make your life and your co-worker's lives easier - bash, Python, and Perl (we have an extensive library of Perl scripts to look after) are all focus points for our group.
- This ties somewhat into scripting, but Ansible experience would be considered an asset.
- Database experience, working with PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB are all great to know, but generally just understanding how to navigate databases would be considered an asset.
- Any experience using git would be considered an asset.

**Do I have any examples of real-world projects I might be working on?**
- Assisting in the creation and maintenance of documentation for all services.
- Assisting in the migration from an older hypervisor to a new hypervisor stack (Proxmox).
- Migrating services that run on older virtual machines to new ones with the latest up-to-date Linux distributions.
- Auditing and converting standalone projects, scripts, and configurations to use in-house version control (git).
- Assisting in the deployment of new monitoring tools.
- Providing after hours support in the event of hardware, storage, or networking failures.
- Assisting co-workers in their day-to-day tasks/projects.

Lastly, we're a team here at Vianet and we support each other. Joining the Systems Department means you'll be working with a talented group of professionals who understand the value in teamwork. We ask that you have the same attitude.
