The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Providence Health Care is looking for a Tissue Research Scientists (Pathologists’ Assistant) to start as soon as possible. Based at St. Paul’s Hospital, a tertiary academic hospital located in downtown Vancouver, B.C., we are one of the two major teaching hospitals in Greater Vancouver, with major programs in gastroenterology, colorectal surgery, breast surgery, cardiology, cardiac and vascular surgery, nephrology, endocrinology, and respirology. **JOB SUMMARY**

Tissue Research Scientists (Pathologists’ Assistant) are laboratory professionals tasked with furthering the service and academic mission of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine by ensuring that each specimen is evaluated in a manner to facilitate pre-analytical tissue handling, biobanking, research, and education to the highest possible standards. The Tissue Research Scientist will be required to work at PHC’s St. Paul’s Hospital and Mount Saint Joseph Hospital Sites.

Reporting to the Division Head of Anatomical Pathology, Tissue Research Scientist (Pathologists’ Assistant) duties include: Responsibility and proficiency for the initial examination and dissection of simple to complex surgical specimens. Facilitates allocation of appropriate material for active research studies, biobanking, and teaching. Reviews patient charts and prepares preliminary summary of clinical information for assigned autopsy cases. Performs dissection of bodies during post-mortem examinations. Develops and maintains laboratory policies, procedures and protocols related to tissue specimens. Assists with research. Participates in the instruction of medical trainees, including Pathology residents. Participates in quality assurance and safety programs.

**QUALIFICATIONS**

**Education, Training, and Experience**

One of the following:

- Completion of a recognized Pathologists’ Assistant Master’s Program or equivalent
- Relevant medical/life science training with minimum of 5 years’ experience performing pathologist assistant duties in an academic hospital clinical lab
- Certification with the Canadian Association of Pathologists and/or certification with the American Society for Clinical Pathology, or eligibility for and immediate intent to obtain the certification.

**Skills and Abilities**
- Knowledge of laboratory safety and techniques
- Familiarity with principles of diagnostic anatomical pathology
- Demonstrated ability to recognize and describe gross anatomical features
- Ability to work with diligence, meticulousness and exceptional organizational skills
- Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment
- Effective time management skills
- Strong communication skills in written and spoken form with all levels of scientific and clinical faculty, staff, trainees, and patients
- Ability to work with sensitive information and data in a discrete and professional manner
- Demonstrated ability to operate related equipment and use related software
- Demonstrated ability to teach and supervise
- Demonstrated physical ability to perform the duties of the job
- Ability to work in a dynamic, busy environment
- Flexibility and willingness to learn and perform new tasks as required
