**THE TEAM**:
The Policy, Planning & Law team performs a Secretariat function for the Board, supports organizational strategic planning and alignment, manages member consultation, leads operational and policy work on digital health matters, provides policy advice for and on behalf of the Board of Directors, and supports the legal support and advice needs of the organization.
Working within Doctors of BC, the Policy, Planning & Law team supports other departments such as Engagement & Quality Improvement, the Physician Health Program, Communications, and the Economics, Advocacy and Negotiations departments to ensure we understand our members’ collective views on issues and can advocate for BC’s physicians in a way that is representative and effective, and provide legal, policy and engagement support and advice as needed.
**THE JOB: Legal Counsel**
Reporting to the Vice President Policy & Planning, the Legal Counsel is accountable for providing advice and counsel regarding corporate legal issues including contract review/drafting, advice on employment matters, and provision of strategic legal advice. The Legal Counsel will provide legal guidance and assistance primarily to the Engagement & Quality Improvement Department.
- act as a trusted adviser ensuring that the Engagement & Quality Improvement Department is provided high quality, trusted legal advice on all relevant issues;
- achieve excellence in the administration of all legal matters within your portfolio;
- ensure the needs of the Doctors of BC in all legal matters within your portfolio are met in an efficient and effective manner;
- participate on committees as assigned and provide guidance, information and advice regarding issues under discussion;
- provide principled, value-based advice and contribute to a culture of trust both within the staff of the Doctors of BC and amongst Doctors of BC Members;
- monitor political, legislative, and societal issues of relevance to the programs within your portfolio;
- working with the other Legal Counsel at Doctors of BC, review and analyze proposed legislation pertaining to the medical profession and provide legal opinions to relevant departments and committees as required; and
- draft and review contracts and other agreements entered into or to be entered into by the Doctors of BC, it’s departments, programs, or members.
