Academic Advisor
- key responsibilities:

- Advise all students in the Program regarding MOHE’s Policy as well as degree requirements, course selection, and progression procedures. This includes the development of proactive advising strategies.
- Maintain accurate records and data regarding students
- Primary contact for students who may experience academic or personal difficulties. Demonstrate emergency response skills and good decision-making in dealing with safety issues. Incumbent should be well acquainted with campus mental health counselors.
- provides input into academic decision that may impact a student’s academic record.

Responsible for initiating, implementing, and monitoring academic progression requirements in the Program. Initiate review of, and correspondence with, students in violation of regulations. Liaise with representatives of attending School, student advocates and/or counsel, and senior administrators in the university
- Manage, plan, and execute events as required, using multiple methods, and communicating appropriately with a range of students during meetings.
- Develop academic advising and orientation strategy for incoming & outgoing students; engage in academic advising specifically focusing on the students and their issues. In collaboration with the program coordinator to track student compliance; oversee attendance, recordkeeping and compliance measures; Evaluate, improve, and report on performance.
- Being knowledgeable about promoting and referring students to appropriate campus and community resources and services.
- Develop and maintain relationships with a variety of the University stakeholder groups to ensure continuity of information and services.
- Work on or assist with other projects.
- Track, update and report data pertaining to alumni mobility for reporting purposes for accreditations, rankings, etc.

Required qualifications:

- University degree in a related field
- Minimum of two years of experience in a post-secondary institution working with students is considered a strong asset.
- Familiarity with short-term Counselling Techniques and Crisis-intervention skills
- Familiarity with current research and professional literature pertaining to effective interventions for a variety of personal, behavioral, emotional and cognitive difficulties for students
- Experience and ability to relate to students from diverse social, economic, and cultural backgrounds
- Experience in a similar role, preferably in a fast-paced, multi-stakeholder environment
- Experience developing and delivering information sessions and presentations to students
- Understanding of a university environment, including the resources available to students
- Knowledge of the needs and experiences of undergraduate students, and direct experience working with students in a post-secondary setting.
- Knowledge of the related policies considered a strong asset

- A positive attitude and excellent interpersonal skills. Incumbent interacts with many different individuals in a variety of contexts including students, parents, staff, faculty, and other units within the University's community
- Maintaining currency in academic advising trends and techniques for international students through professional development
- Excellent advising skills; these would include the ability to establish an empathic relationship and to engender trust; sound judgment; knowledge of advising process
- Project management ability and the capability of managing several projects simultaneously
- Team player, with a service-oriented attitude
- Strong organizational skills
- Self-starter and ability to work independently
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
- Research, analytical and interpretive skills. Ability to synthesize information from a wide variety of sources
- Ability to work under time constraints and meet deadlines; ability to maintain project focus despite frequent interruptions
- Ability to prioritize and multi-task

Pay: $50,000.00-$55,000.00 per year

Schedule:

- Monday to Friday

- Ottawa, ON K1N 9K1: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)
