The Camp Cook is directly responsible to the Summer Camp Director.
All staff who work at a camp enjoy working with children and youth ages 6-17. Staff are enthusiastic and excited facilitators of a safe and fun summer camp for all participants.
The successful applicant is welcome to remain onsite for the duration of camp (with weekends off), but can commute if desired.
All staff promote a Christian community, based on United Church philosophy, in which every individual is treated with respect to make each camp experience a unique and fulfilling experience for all participants.
**Responsibilities**:
- The camp cook is required to plan, prepare, and serve 3 meals and 2 snacks each day that are nutritious and follow Canada’s Food Guide for camps as large as approximately 75 persons
- Consult with the Camp Director to be familiar with any allergies or dietary needs that must be accommodated for at each camp and ensuring substitutions are provided for those campers and staff at each meal/snack
- Ordering necessary groceries and kitchen supplies within the budget provided by Bar Harbour Camp
- Prepare all meals and snacks each day following the schedule provided
- With assistance, prepare and clean the kitchen for camp and clean out the kitchen after camp has ended
- Ensure that the kitchen area and equipment are kept in a clean and orderly manner while maintaining provincial health standards
- In consultation with the Program team, facilitate the opportunity for supervised programs for campers in the kitchen
- Be responsible for the training and supervision of the Assistant Cook (if applicable) and any volunteers
- Be familiar with camp emergency procedures. Respect and comply with all camp policies and procedures
- Such further and other duties that may be determined by the Director from time to time
**Skills and Attributes**:
- Excellent time management skills to prepare meals and snacks in a timely manner so as to not disrupt the daily schedule
- Excellent communication skills to interact effectively with colleagues and campers
- Ability to recognize burnout in a timely manner and implement effective and reasonable self-care strategies
- Exceptional patience and ability to self-regulate when faced with challenging situations and adversity
- Willingness to self-advocate, including asking for accommodations or additional breaks when needed, asking questions, pointing out discrepancies in scheduling or instructions, delegate tasks, etc.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a positive attitude and ongoing adaptability with the frequent changes and challenges that arise
**Qualifications**:
- Food Handling Certification
- Current (within 6 months) Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector
- Current (within 1 year) Social Services Intervention Check (free from social services)
- Experience cooking for large groups of people
- Standard First Aid and CPR certification (not required, but considered an asset)
- Experience working with industrial kitchen equipment is considered an asset
**Remuneration**: $700 per week (maximum 5 weeks), room and board provided
