**Working for the Biological Sciences - Faculty of Science**
The Department of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Science at the University of Alberta is a vibrant and diverse academic unit committed to excellence in research, teaching, and community engagement. Our faculty members lead innovative research programs across a wide range of biological disciplines, from molecular biology to ecology and evolution, contributing to scientific discovery and environmental stewardship at local and global levels.
**Position Summary**
The Cahill Lab in the Department of Biological Sciences is seeking a full-time **Lab Assistant** to support cutting-edge research in plant ecology. This one-year term position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to ecological experiments, sample processing, and lab operations within a collaborative and dynamic research environment. If you’re organized, detail-oriented, and passionate about plants and ecological research, this role offers a chance to develop your skills and contribute to impactful science.
**Duties**
- Conduct plant ecology experiments and collect data using image capture and manual measurements
- Process plant samples using grinding, extractions, and digital tools like WinRhizotron
- Maintain greenhouse and lab spaces in compliance with phytosanitation protocols
- Track and manage lab supplies, ordering materials as needed
- Support scheduling, manuscript preparation, and lab data organization
- Assist with troubleshooting technical procedures and data collection issues
**Minimum Qualifications**
- Bachelor of Science degree in Plant Ecology, Biology, or a related field
- Experience conducting experiments in greenhouse and mesocosm environments
- Proficiency in processing biological samples and managing data
- Knowledge of phytosanitation and care of living plant specimens
- Familiarity with laboratory operations in the biological sciences
- Effective time management and the ability to work independently
**Preferred Qualifications**
- Master of Science degree in Plant Ecology or a related discipline
- Experience with image-based data analysis tools (e.g., WinRhizotron)
- Familiarity with university purchasing and scheduling systems
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot technical and experimental issues
- Experience supporting manuscript preparation and research communications
