**Position Purpose & Overview**

The Janitor ensures that school buildings and property are clean, safe, and sanitary. A Janitor at St. John’s School works effectively as a team, takes initiative, and does the right thing. This position is casual with ad-hoc hours.

**Key Responsibilities**
- Vacuums, dusts, sweeps, mops, washes and waxes offices, rooms, lobbies, and other school areas as assigned.
- Moves and resets tables, chairs, and other classroom and office furniture.
- Inspects all washrooms, hallways, change rooms, and stairways to ensure safety and cleanliness.
- Monitors and removes garbage from school grounds, the surrounding area, and parkade.
- Monitors and replaces consumable supplies in dispensers (hand sanitizer, toilet paper, paper towels, soap, etc.)
- Sanitizes high touch surfaces throughout the school, including door knobs, light switches, railings, desks, and phones.
- Identifies facility or maintenance issues and reports them to the Associate Director of Operations on a timely basis.
- Quickly responds to requests for service from faculty and staff.
- Secures building doors and locks at night.
- This role will require working hours outside of school office hours: often evening events; occasionally going offsite to document student programs; and occasional morning and weekend commitments._

On rare occasions where there are urgent needs at the School, an employee may be assigned to temporarily backfill role(s) critical to the school’s operations and business continuity._

**Reporting Structure**
- Department: Facilities
- Reports to: Associate Director of Operations
- Key Interactions:

- Internal: All faculty and staff at the School, including Receptionists, Principals, and Department Heads, and students.
- External: Parents, alumni, and external vendors.

**Job Information**
- Casual on-call permanent term.
- Work location: on-site.
- Hours of Work: as needed (ad-hoc hours).
- Hourly rate of $22.49.

**Required Qualifications and Key Skills**
- Education & Work Experience_
- Previous experience working in a cleaning or janitorial role (education or hospitality sector is preferred).
- A Building Service Worker Certificate is preferred.
- WHMIS certificate or knowledge.
- A valid first aid certificate (BC Occupational First Aid Level 1).
- Can operate heavy cleaning equipment, including scrubbers, waxers, and carpet extractors.

- Abilities to communicate effectively, both orally and written, with internal and external customers.
- Professional and efficient in their duties.
- Self-motivated and flexible, with a high attention to detail.
- Enthusiastic, energetic, a self-starter and the ability to work independently and in teams.
- Organized with the ability to work under deadlines with conflicting demands.

**Success Measures**
- Follow school guidelines and policies relating to cleaning and occupational health and safety (WorkSafe BC).
- Ongoing and effective communication with the Associate Director of Operations, team members, and clients.
- All areas of the school are receiving care and attention on a daily basis; floors, stairways, and walkways are clean and free of debris, washrooms are maintained to an expected standard of cleanliness, classrooms are clean and sanitary.
- School is locked, armed, and secure at the end of each shift.
- Daily janitorial requests are met in a prompt and complete manner.

**Conditions of Employment**
- Clearance on criminal record check for vulnerable sector is a condition of employment
- Ability to legally work in Canada, in an educational setting is a condition of employment
