**Building Multicultural Communities (BMC)** is a charity established in 1987 that provides settlement and social services to newcomers, immigrants and the larger community in the Peel Region. Our mandate and core business is to enable less advantaged individuals, families and groups in the community to reach their full potential, enhance their life skills, and create a better future. BMC has a variety of specialized programs that cater to specific demographics and focus on providing different services such as (Settlement, Mental Health, Youth Development, Employment, and Seniors Support) making BMC a one-stop-shop for needed services. As a Mental Health Counsellor you will support youth aged 15-29 in transitioning from homelessness to stable living by providing housing stability, promoting self-sufficiency through life skills development, education, or employment, mental health counselling, and close service gaps by ensuring timely access to mental health support.

**RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Program planning, development and implementation, monitoring, case management, evaluation and documentation
- Provide in-person individual counselling sessions, offering support to homeless youth.
- Utilize evidence-based approaches and trauma-informed care to address trauma, anxiety, depression, and stress management
- Assist youth in accessing housing, employment, education, and community-based mental health services and resources
- Collaborate with youth to develop personalized mental health goals and coping strategies, fostering emotional stability and resilience
- Provide immediate crisis support to youth experiencing acute distress, panic attacks, or other mental health emergencies
- Connect youth with ongoing therapeutic support and mental health services to stabilize their well-being.
- Maintain accurate client records, case notes, and reports, ensuring compliance with documentation requirements
- Assist in the operation of agency's programs and services including information updating, filing, compiling monthly statistics, activity and outcome report monthly, quarterly, yearly basis
- Maintain internal and external statistics/reports utilizing internal database
- Research, develop, and prepare materials related to client intervention and services
- Liaise with other services (e.g. medical, psychiatric, legal, housing, etc.) and advocate on behalf of the client
- Conduct community education sessions and workshops with the goal of reducing stigma associated with mental illness
- Distribute promotional material about the services at all BMC service locations and create awareness of our services in the community
- Attend staff meetings and training sessions as required
- Any other duties related to the settlement services and this position
- Reports to Executive Director or his/her designate

**QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS**
- Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology/Mental Health Counselling, Master's Degree preferred
- 2 years’ experience as a counsellor working with youth struggling with mental health issues and understanding of housing support systems and barriers youth face in transitioning to independent living.
- Experience working with homeless youth in a support, advocacy, or case management capacity
- Ability to utilize verbal de-escalation techniques to effectively provide crisis intervention
- Demonstrated skills in case management, assessment and intervention, and advocacy
- Ability to multitask while maintaining high level of accuracy in data collection
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, presentation and facilitation skills
- Experience integrating mental health support into life skills training programs.
- Experience working with LGBTQ+ youth, Indigenous youth, and other marginalized groups at higher risk of homelessness
- Familiarity with data collection and program evaluation methods for mental health programs
- Capability to handle multiple priorities with ease and professionalism; able to work in a fast-paced environment with mínimal supervision
- Fluent in English and ability to speak, read and write in a second language is a definite asset
- Strong communication (oral and written), and computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.)
- Adaptive to flexible working hours including evenings and weekends as needed
- Police Record Check for Vulnerable Sector is required as part of the hiring process
- Must have own transportation, driver license and insurance to use your vehicle for job related travelling
