Position Summary
The Vice President Academic is the chief academic officer of the college and is accountable for the planning, organizing, staffing and managing of the college’s academic operations. The position is accountable for the content and delivery of the college’s postsecondary and non-postsecondary full-time, part-time and apprenticeship programs and services. Managing the Academic Quality Assurance Program is a key component of academic programming. The Vice President Academic is also responsible for leadership, direction and management of the programs and services provided to students at the college under the Student Success umbrella including the Library, and the Health Centre. The Vice President Academic is the primary source of advice/advocacy and for the provision of student services that enhance the quality of education and student life. This position is a senior administrator who participates in the overall management of the college as a member of the president’s senior management team. The Vice President Academic is a staff resource to the Board of Governors and is also called upon to assume the role of Acting President when required.

Academic Leadership, Vision and Direction for Academic Programs and Services

Develops and directs the implementation of the strategic plan, goals and objectives for the college’s postsecondary and non-postsecondary full-time, part-time and apprenticeship programs and services through collaboration with, assistance and support of the college’s academic administrators and staff.

Develops, directs and maintains an Academic Plan.

Ensures the quality of the college’s academic programs by developing, implementing and monitoring sound academic policies and procedures.

Provides leadership to the academic development of the college through planning, developing and implementing of new academic programs and ensures the college engages in an effective program renewal process.

Establishes partnerships and linkages with representatives of business and industry, and other educational institutions to promote college programs, create partnerships and develop articulation agreements.

Directs and monitors all academic activity including curriculum development and delivery, instructional methods, academic standards and student evaluation methods.

Participates as a key player on the college’s strategic enrolment team and monitors enrolment closely.

Directs all Program Quality Assurance programs.

Promotes and creates appropriate community ventures by forming networks and linkages through the development of learning partnerships with business, the community, and other colleges by way of projects, articulation agreements and program/service advisory committees.

Student Success

Provides leadership for the Director of Student Success who is responsible for student support services, the health centre and the library.

Accountable for matters that affect the quality of student life at the college including the provision/administration/delivery of related services such as counselling, health, peer tutoring and special needs to support student needs.

Promotes student success by adapting student services and developing/implementing sound policies, procedures and strategies that support the educational and learning needs of students.

Develops and manages a retention and graduation strategy to improve retention and graduation.

**Corporate Leadership and Planning**:
Participates in the development, implementation and monitoring of the college’s strategic plan and goals.

As a member of the president’s senior management team, makes decisions regarding the management of resources and participates in a wide range of operational decision making affecting the current and future effectiveness of the college.

Participates in the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the college’s strategic business plan and goals.

Assists the President and senior management team in advising the Board of Governors on corporate issues related to academic matters, industry, government and student life.

Ensures that the President and senior management team is informed about issues and initiatives that impact both academic and non-academic operations in the college.

**Human/Financial/Physical Resources**:
Ensures that the assignments of academic faculty and staff are carried out consistent with college policies and procedures and the various collective agreements.

Maintains a high level of staff performance through effective recruiting, selecting, training, developing, motivating, and evaluating.

Disciplines and terminates staff as warranted. Handles serious complaints from students and staff as required.
