As an organization, we provide support to the greater Squamish Nation Community through service. With 12 departments with individual areas of expertise, we ensure Community Members have access to necessary programs and services.
**About The Opportunity**:
Working as an integral part of the Ta na wa Yúus ta Stitúyntsam̓ Rights & Title Department, this position reports directly to the Natural Resources Specialist. This position is responsible for fisheries-related field programming within the Rights and Title Department. The Fish Guardian Supervisor will understand Sḵwx̱wú7mesh traditional teachings along with a strong connection to the outdoors and a passion for fisheries. The Fish Guardian Supervisor oversees, supports, and facilitates the Squamish Fish Guardian Program and related staff. The Fish Guardians protect Squamish Nation’s fish harvesting rights by providing a safe place for membership to fish for food, social and ceremonial purposes. They act as seasonal river monitors, looking after fishery resources and habitat, and uphold the Squamish Nation Fishing Bylaws. The Fish Guardian Supervisor works from June to October and oversees the day-to-day operations of the Fish Guardian Program staff. Fish Guardians typically work in shifts of 2-4 crews. The Fish Guardian Supervisor will work both independently and alongside field crews providing on-site support, education, youth mentorship, and incident response. This role will be approximately field-based with some office coordination and limited office work as needed during the fish season. Work will require regular land patrols and may also require water-based travel. Required to operate 4x4 trucks on rough access roads. Must be physically fit and able to work outside for long periods of time in all weather conditions. The Fish Guardian Supervisor will work in collaboration with the Natural Resource Manager to supervise and coordinate field activities and scheduling. The Fish Guardian Supervisor maintains consistent communication with the Natural Resources Specialist and Manager. The Fish Guardian Supervisor will also be involved in a variety of initiatives that include planning, training, monitoring, and protection of marine, freshwater, and cultural resources. The Fish Guardian Supervisor may also be required to participate in environmental and emergency response.
**What You Bring**:
- Combination of education and experience.
- Excellent leadership skills with a positive, upbeat, outgoing personality.
- Knowledge of local marine and terrestrial species and preferably strong fish identification skills, monitoring and surveying techniques.
- Knowledge of Squamish Nation fisheries programs.
- Mechanically inclined with in-board and out-board maintenance experience.
- Familiarity with Indigenous governance and resource management laws and regulations.
- High level of emotional intelligence, patience, and integrity with demonstrated conflict resolution skills.
- Team-oriented with a positive, approachable attitude and an ability to deliver negative information tactfully and diplomatically when needed.
- Can lift up to 50lbs and is physically able to perform on site duties required for the role.
**Salary**: $ 50,550 - $ 56,045 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits program.
