CLINICAL EXTERN - NURSING
This externship is an exciting employment opportunity for nursing students currently enrolled in a recognized RN or RPN program, to contribute their knowledge and skills in a hospital care environment supporting the communities we serve.
POSITION TITLE: Clinical Extern - Nursing
SITE: Nursing Externs will be placed at one or more of the four sites of the HPHA. Please indicate in the screening questions your site preference in order. Externs will be assigned a “home unit”, with the opportunity to float between units to broaden their clinical experiences.

- Seaforth Community Hospital - Inpatient Unit & Emergency Department
- St. Marys Memorial Hospital - Inpatient Unit & Emergency Department
- Stratford General Hospital - Integrated Stroke Unit/Telemetry
- Stratford General Hospital - Medicine/Complex Continuing Care
- Stratford General Hospital - Inpatient Surgical Unit
- Stratford General Hospital - Maternal/Child Unit (additional training required)
- Stratford General Hospital - Inpatient Mental Health
- Stratford General Hospital - Emergency Department
- Stratford General Hospital - Critical Care Unit
- Stratford General Hospital - OR/PACU/Day Surgery Unit (additional training required)
STATUS: Temporary Full-Time & Temporary Part-Time x50
SHIFTS: 12-hour shifts
Availability: Required for Days and Nights including Weekends and Stat Holidays
REPORTS TO: Manager, Nursing Practice
DATE REQUIRED: May 1, 2025 with an option to work reading week and Christmas Break
SALARY: $20.60 per hour
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Nursing students enrolled in their 2nd, 3rd and 4th year of a College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) approved Baccalaureate Nursing (BScN or BN) program, or in their final year of Practical Nursing (PN) program
- A minimum of one clinical placement with strong attendance record
- Current certificate in Basic Life Support or willingness to obtain upon hire
- The successful applicant must provide proof of enrollment in the appropriate post-secondary education program to qualify.
DUTIES INCLUDE (but are not limited to):
- Practices using acquired knowledge, skills and judgment needed to perform all actions/duties.
- Follows organizational policies and professional standards.
- Understands personal and role limitations when accepting delegation from registered health professionals.
- Participates in patient assessments and basic patient care; take and record vital signs to include temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, oxygenation, blood glucose, weight, height, intake-output measurements, and skin assessments.
- Supports activities of daily living, including dressing, bathing, shaving, feeding, and oral care.
- Requests assistance with assigned duties whenever necessary.
- Contributes to care planning and evaluation.
- Assists nursing staff in complicated treatment procedures.
- Provides assistance with lifting, turning, transferring, transporting and ambulating.
- Provides measures to ensure skin integrity and reduce pressure injuries.
- Assists with comfort measures and patient safety by ensuring the environment is clean and tidy and free of hazards.
- Accurate documentation of all patient care and treatments provided.
- Provides transfer of accountability at shift report and when going on break.
- Contributes to and supports positive team functioning.
- Contributes to organizational initiatives, including process improvement projects.
- Other duties as assigned.
