The Economics and Fiscal Policy Division plays an integral role in the development of Alberta’s economic and fiscal strategies and is responsible for the development, interpretation, and analysis of economic, fiscal, and statistical data to support policy development and decision-making. The position will work in the Policy and Strategic Supports (PSS) branch.

The PSS branch provides policy advice and analysis on a broad range of fiscal issues, often leading and participating in high-profile cross-ministry special projects. The team monitors and analyzes fiscal developments and trends across Canadian jurisdictions, including relevant policy developments with significant longer-term fiscal implications for the province. The PSS branch is also responsible for providing expert analysis and advice on federal-provincial and interprovincial fiscal issues and negotiations.

Under the Executive Director, PSS, the Manager, Strategic and Intergovernmental Policy, plays a pivotal role in supporting the branch’s efforts to deliver innovative and comprehensive policy solutions. This is a unique opportunity to work on projects that span fiscal analysis, cross-ministry initiatives, and intergovernmental relations, influencing policies that affect Alberta’s residents, businesses, and overall fiscal health. You will be instrumental in providing senior decision-makers with accurate analysis and recommendations while collaborating with a wide range of stakeholders both within and beyond government.

In this role, you will support the development of fiscal and policy analysis on a wide array of issues and participate in cross-ministry initiatives that cover social, economic, and environmental policies, as well as provincial-municipal fiscal matters. Your work will involve analyzing public policy developments, drafting policy documents such as Cabinet Reports and briefing materials, and developing sophisticated computerized models to simulate policy scenarios. You will monitor fiscal trends at the federal and provincial levels, evaluate intergovernmental fiscal arrangements, and contribute to budget chapters and fiscal updates that require rapid, in-depth analysis.

Beyond analysis, you will lead the evaluation of policy outcomes, ensuring that Alberta’s legislation remains consistent with evolving provincial policies. You will also play a central role in communicating complex policy information, both in official government communications and through direct interactions with federal and provincial officials, stakeholder groups, and the public. In addition, you will manage external contracts with private consultants and foster proactive, collaborative relationships with senior officials across various government levels, academia, and the non-profit sector. Your expertise will guide legislative drafting, support cost estimates for new policies, and ultimately influence decisions that have far-reaching implications for Alberta’s fiscal position and policy landscape.
