**Job Description**:
**Mental Health Counsellor**

The scope of the role includes but not limited to providing direct mental health support services to new immigrants of all ages, and through a variety of activities and internal supports, will increase the knowledge and capacity of front line staff working in areas of mental wellness and crisis response.

**RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Conduct initial mental health assessment of individual clients and help clients identify existing strengths and assets, while exploring their current needs in dealing with the challenges and difficulties they are experiencing.
- Provide evidence based intervention, one on one counselling to individuals and families in supporting the development of goal setting and personal skills, identifying specialized services as required to effectively deal with mental health challenges
- Provide case management by coordinating with the appropriate additional community supports and services needed to ensure optimum care within the boundaries of confidentiality and disclosure
- Offer longer term follow up with clients to ensure that they are able to successfully navigate the mental health service network.
- Liaise with internal and external supports and partners (i.e. mental health service providers, Settlement Workers, Crisis Support Counselors) for client’s recovery and integration into the society
- Make appropriate referrals to longer term community support services and/or mental health services as required
- Plan, organize and facilitate group activities and orientation sessions on mental health related topics
- Conduct outreach activities to newcomer communities to increase awareness of the service and raise awareness of mental health
- Build strong collaborations with mental health and social service agencies to facilitate an effective delivery of mental health services in the community.
- Prepare written mental health assessments, case notes and related data, and correspondence and ensuring accurate recording of data per agency and funder
- Other related duties as assigned.

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- The minimum level of education preferred is a social work/or equivalent degree; Bachelor of Social Work with experience or Masters of Social Work. discipline
- Minimum of 3 years of experience providing mental health/ Crisis Support counselling with related background in Newcomer mental health, refugees and trauma counselling.
- Membership in good standing in related provincial regulatory association is an asset
- Ability to build partnerships and work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders
- Knowledge, understanding and sensitivity to issues affecting immigrant and refugee communities
- Demonstrated commitment to high standards of culturally responsive service delivery within an anti-racism and anti-oppression framework.
- Demonstrated high degree of initiative, judgement and problem-solving ability
- Demonstrated ability in using discretion in dealing with highly sensitive and confidential issues
- Good organizational skills, ability to multi-task while maintaining a high level of accuracy
- Demonstrated skills in development and facilitation of group training sessions
- Knowledge of community resources and services relating to mental health services
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point).
- Proficient in Google platforms (slack, forms, surveys, meet etc.), virtual meeting tools, social media
- Excellent oral and written English communication skills. Fluency in a second language such as Arabic, Urdu, Hindi, is required
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
- Willing to travel within Scarborough
- A clear Vulnerable Sector Police Reference Check is **mandatory**

**Location**: Scarborough

**Hours**: 35 hrs/week; occasional evenings and weekends as required
