YOUR OPPORTUNITY We are seeking a Commercial & Risk Director to join our Energy and Resources Business Operating Unit (E&R BOU). This senior leadership role partners with operations, pursuit, and project teams to guide business and legal decisions across pursuits, contracts, negotiations, and project delivery, driving successful outcomes while minimizing financial risk.

The Director will lead the implementation of the Corporate Project Risk Practice within the BOU, including risk reviews for high-profile projects, enterprise risk assessments, and development of mitigation strategies. They will oversee project governance and execution practices aimed at reducing claims and write-offs.

Reporting to the Business Operating Unit Leader (BOUL), this role will engage directly on pursuits and projects with elevated risk profiles, including multinational clients and others spanning multiple geographic regions. By bridging legal, commercial, and execution priorities, the Director will play a critical role in delivering win-win outcomes for both Stantec and its clients.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead the BOU’s implementation of Stantec’s Project Risk Practice for North America and North America Exports, including supervising and directing the Senior Risk Manager and Risk Manager.
- During pursuits where a project, client, or contract presents an elevated risk to Stantec, engage with the team to provide strategic guidance on how best to achieve Stantec’s commercial and financial goals through the best combination of contract terms, scope, schedule, pricing, and budgets.
- Oversee, guide and where necessary, participate in or lead negotiations with clients, teaming partners, and subconsultants, regarding contract terms & conditions, scoping and commercial aspects including pricing and change orders on the identified elevated risk profile pursuits and projects.
- Offer guidance and oversight for projects with higher risk profiles to enhance performance through effective change management, including identifying and documenting changes conditions and their impacts on Stantec, pursuing change order and contract amendments, and maintaining appropriate communication with clients. Independently or by selecting or advising suitable personnel, provide direction and support for complex and high-risk projects to safeguard Stantec’s interests.
- Mentor and develop project pursuit teams and project teams on projects identified by the BOU to improve commercial, contracting and negotiating acumen.
- Work with the Senior Project Management Commercial Leaders to promote best practices for both elevated risk projects and more traditional project pursuits and delivery, including tools, processes, and policies.
- Develop high trust relationships with business leadership, project managers, pursuit leads and functional service teams and become a sought-after resource to teams seeking project success.
- Foster a success-oriented, accountable environment.
- Uphold a corporate culture that promotes ethical practices, encourages individual integrity, and focuses on customer and service delivery.
- Provide support through ongoing interface with BOU Leaders regarding diagnosis and resolution of operational issues and continual improvement opportunities.
- Be an advocate for and promote a positive Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) culture, compliance with HSSE requirements, and lead by example.

CAPABILITIES AND CREDENTIALS:

- Bachelor's degree with a minimum of twenty years of related work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and related experience. Strong proven commercial acumen. Experience in contract law, risk management and the A-E industry strongly preferred.
- Strong commercial awareness and negotiating skills including pricing strategies and both contractual and non-contractual risk mitigations.
- Strong understanding of enterprise risks and able to exercise good judgment as to which risks can be mitigated, and which risks must be avoided.
- Extensive knowledge of items that may have a significant impact on projects or Stantec including project schedules, regulatory landscape, technical risks, contractual terms, or client behaviors.
