Reporting to the City Solicitor, the Paralegal position will assist the Prosecutor with carriage of prosecution matters under the Provincial Offences Act, have independent carriage of legal proceedings and hearings in Small Claims Court, and provide assistance to the City Solicitor and Lawyers.
**Responsibilities**:
- Providing support and assistance to the Prosecutor with carriage of files regarding offences contrary to the City’s by-laws and/or Provincial legislation
- If required, and on an as-needed basis, conducting quasi-judicial written and in-person proceedings as a Screening Officer
- Administering prosecutions collections processes and having carriage of legal proceedings in the Small Claims Court including claims by and against the City
- Assist the City Solicitor and Lawyers with conducting legal research and attending tribunals and boards as second chair. Partake in collaborative efforts on litigition files. Being familiar with all applicable legislation and regulation
- Educating and training various departments and staff on a variety of substantive and procedural issues respecting municipal prosecutions and Small Claims Court proceedings. Responsible for liaising with departments such as MLELS, Fire Services, and Building Services to coordinate a collaborative approach to prosecutions matters on an ongoing basis
- Provide assistance in a second chair capacity with carriage of Provincial Offences Act appeals before the Ontario Court of Justice including researching, drafting appeal materials, and arguing appeals
- Provide administrative and clerical support to City Solicitor, Prosecutor, and lawyers as required
- Manage Paralegal students participating in co-operative education programs for law clerks and the college’s Paralegal Program demonstrating duties and assigning and reviewing tasks
**Requirements**:
- Completion of three (3) year post-secondary diploma in a related field (Paralegal, Paralegal Graduate Certificate) or equivalent, and licensed by the Law Society of Ontario as a Paralegal
- Minimum of three (3) years of demonstrated experience as a Paralegal with knowledge of legal proceedings and appeals including legal research, legal drafting, and advocacy in the Ontario Court of Justice, Small Claims Court, and Tribunals
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
- Excellent organization and time management skills
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain good working relationships. Able to work constructively in a team environment
- Possession and maintenance of a valid, unrestricted, Ontario Drivers Licence, minimum Class “G”
