THE OPPORTUNITY
The Maintenance Worker in Utilities is a 16-week work practicum for students enrolled in Water and Wastewater Technician program at NAIT. Employees in this position assist and perform duties necessary to meet competencies required to assist in the operation and maintenance of programs and services of the City of Spruce Grove's Distribution and Wastewater Collection systems. The employee will perform a variety of all tasks directly related to the support of core operations and maintenance programs including the water distribution system, water reservoirs and pump stations, bulk water station, water meters and the sanitary sewer collection system. This position reports to the Manager of Utilities and receives day to day direction from the Foreman of Utilities.
This is a temporary full-time position (40 hours per week) from May 5, 2025, to August 29, 2025. This position is part of the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE).
Probationary Rate: $29.93 per hour
Base Rate: $30.55
Developmental Rate: $31.31 per hour
Qualified Rate: $32.06 per hour
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Water Distribution Maintenance and Service
- Carry out assigned tasks in accordance with all regulatory and guidance documents.
- Pump house data collection and routine operations.
- Facility maintenance operation and cleaning.
- Hydrant inspection, operation and maintenance including painting and snow removal.
- Water main valve operation.
- Water service valve operation (turn on / turn off).
- Water Service valve repair.
- Water sampling.
- Meter installations, reads and operational checks.
- Utility locates of water, sewer and traffic light infrastructure and appurtenances.
- Participate in construction inspections.
- Assist with underground water service and main line repairs.
- Assist permanent staff with water service excavation and repair by hydrovac and/or excavator backhoe.
- Provide data input to water operations records and reports.
- Participate in the execution of water system maintenance programs (UDF, valve adjustment, valve operation, etc.)
- Ensure equipment and vehicles are maintained in a clean condition.
- Assist in CCC and FAC inspections.
- Assist with all assignments related to water distribution operations.
2. Wastewater Collection Maintenance and Service
- Carry out assigned tasks in accordance with all regulatory and guidance documents.
- Assist operators with sewer main flushing operation (hydrovac/flusher unit) and/or swamper duties.
- Assist in manhole inspections and repairs.
- Assist with underground sewer service and main line repairs - excavation and repair by hydrovac and/or excavator backhoe.
- Assist in CCC and FAC inspections.
- Assist with wastewater lagoon operation and maintenance.
- Assist in response to system emergency calls (service line backups, main line backups etc.) with operators when required.
- Maintain wastewater operation records and reports.
- Assist with all assignments related to wastewater collection operations.
3. Maintenance of vehicles, equipment and hand tools
- Daily routine inspection and minor maintenance of tools equipment and/or vehicles.
4. Customer/Client Relations
- When required, respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within area of assignment and refer complaints to the appropriate internal resource in an efficient and timely manner.
- Develop and maintain ongoing working relationships internally with various City departments.
- Assist in the determination of appropriate responses and required assistance to address emergent issues encountered
5. Other Duties
- Understand and adhere to City policies, procedures and standards, whether written or implied, as amended from time to time.
- Contribute to a positive safety culture by always acting in a safe manner and complying with City safety policies and procedures for staff and contractors.
