UNIT SUMMARY
Inpatient Medicine: This Unit provides comprehensive diagnostic, treatment, teaching and follow-up medical care to children and youth with various medical conditions.
Competitions: 22-913 to 22-919 - Permanent 1.0
Hematology/Oncology: This unit provides comprehensive diagnostic, treatment, teaching and comprehensive medical care to children and youth with cancer, blood, and kidney disorders.
Competitions: 22-909 and 22-910 - Permanent 1.0
Inpatient Surgery: This Unit provides specialized services in the surgical care of children and youth.
Competitions: 22-922- Permanent 1.0
Corporate Float: Working for the Float Team is an opportunity to develop a broad range of pediatric HCA skills across various clinical units. Float Team members may be assigned to cover “just in time” needs or longer term vacancies throughout the hospital.

Working as a valuable member of the patient care team and under the direction of a Registered Nurse/ Registered Practical Nurse the HCA provides a range of health care services to support the care of patients, their families and their environment.
**MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES**:
Under the direction and supervision of nursing (RN/RPN), provide holistic patient care by performing activities such as:
a. Providing constant observation of a patient in keeping with CHEO’s Sitter policy
b. Assisting with restraining a patient if required
c. Accompanying patient(s) to the playroom or other requested locations
d. Observing and reporting the patient’s physical and psychological status to nursing staff
e. Assisting in patient lifts and transfers along with positioning, turning and ambulating patients
f. Weighing patients
g. Feeding, bathing/grooming and toileting
h. Assisting with observing and noting input and output
i. As appropriate, obtaining vital sign measurements, reporting findings to RN/RPN and documenting appropriatelyin the medical record
j. Obtaining and labelling non-invasive specimens as directed (i.e. urine)
k. Calming restless patients, maintaining safety devices as ordered
l. Assisting with the preparing of deceased patients and assisting with providing care of the body after death.
Review and follow the plan of care for patients including:
m. Receiving report on patient status and clarifying responsibilities for care as needed and appropriate
n. Documenting delivery of patient care on patient flow sheets and other appropriate documentation tools
Assume responsibility for maintenance of knowledge and skill by:
o. Participating in indirect activities related to patient care and services provided (i.e. staff meetings, educational in-services etc.) as requested
p. Participating in hospital and unit-related programs and other educational activities such as, but not exclusive to:
i. Non-violent Crisis Intervention
ii. Accreditation
iii. Occupational Health & Safety including WHMIS, Fire Safety, Infection Control.
iv. Staff meetings/Unit council/Shift Change meetings
v. Orientation and training of new staff
- Respond to patient/family inquiries (including answering patient call bells) and refer them to the patient’s nurse or Doctor where necessary
- Assist in the preparation/stocking of supplies, material and equipment for use by professional staff
- Maintain good public relations with patients and families by introducing themselves and greeting patients and families
- Perform work in accordance with the provisions of CHEO policies such as Infection Prevention Control, the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations as well as all CHEO corporate/departmental policies and procedures related to health and safety
- Respond to Hospital Codes as indicated in the Code policies
- Respond in a timely manner to portering needs within the hospital, carrying the corporate pager as assigned
- Respond to Unit Emergency situations to assist professional staff as directed
- Participate in quality improvement activities such as CHEOnext improvements or unit audits
Other Related Duties as required
QUALIFICATIONS
- Vulnerable Sector Check (Essential)
- Current CPR Healthcare Provider C (preferred)
- Personal Support Worker / Health Care Aide certificate, or (Essential)
- 2nd year RPN students, or
- 3rd year BScN students, or
- Internationally Educated Nurses
- Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills in English (Essential)
- Excellent organizational and time management skills (Essential)
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team (Essential)
- Demonstrated ability to understand, interpret and carry out written and verbal instructions (Essential)
- Ability to respond to physical demands (e.g., heavy lifts and transfers, run to codes, do restraints) (Essential)
- Bilingual (English/ French) (preferred)
