**Position purpose**:
Reporting to the Assistant Director, Occupational Health & Safety, the Occupational Health and Safety Advisor contributes to the maintenance of a healthy and safe work environment by monitoring and assuring organizational Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) systems and processes by planning, managing, reporting and supporting the joint health and safety committee and their members for workplace inspections and activities to identify hazards or regulatory compliance matters.

This position supports the university community in the execution of their occupational health and safety duties and contributes to ensuring the university’s health and safety compliance. Provides assurance to the university and verifies and promotes organizational compliance with federal, provincial and municipal acts, regulations, university policies, programs and recommended practices.

**In this role, your responsibilities will include**:
Plan, schedule, manage, coordinate, and support the activities of the joint health and safety committee - specifically, workplace inspections and committee’s administrative actions - to ensure a seamless coordination of the inspection process and escalation of recommendations with all involved parties.

Prepare, generate and provide various types of reports, summaries and dashboards related to health and safety to assist in identifying trends, areas/operations of concern and corrective measures to improve the health and safety of the university community. Such reports will also serve to assist in meeting institutional legal obligations (e.g., provision of reports to the joint health and safety committee, workers, management, etc.) and to assist with the identification of strategies to improve the health and safety of the organization.

Plan, develop and implement strategies to evaluate, assess and assure compliance with legislated and organizational occupational health and safety requirements to realize continual improvement. This includes but is not limited to analyzing internal or external trends (benchmarking), consulting and communicating internally and externally, providing recommendations to management, supporting the occupational health and safety committees, etc.

Support the implementation of change processes to improve organizational occupational health and safety (e.g., engage, support and motivate supervisors and managers to nurture responsibility, accountability and leadership within individual faculties/services).

Support implementation of, and monitor compliance with, the occupational health and safety policy, management system, programs and procedures. Builds relationships with members of the university community to recognize and understand the limitations of written safety rules and procedures and to favour control through workplace and process design, critical controls and proven competence.

**What you will bring**:
Undergraduate degree with recognized specialization in occupational health and safety, science, engineering, medicine, environmental science, business administration or other relevant disciplines or an equivalent combination of education and work experience

Four (4) years’ experience in a health and safety discipline.

Professional designation in health and safety (e.g., CRST or CRSP preferred).

Knowledge of educational, research and unionized working environments.

Strong hazard identification and analytical skills; ability to recommend appropriate solutions for complex problems.
