**Summary**:
The Cook is responsible for the daily preparation of meals for up to 40 clients, shopping, ordering and meal planning according to guidelines of Canada’s Food Guide.

**Duties and Responsibilities**:
Program and Service Responsibilities:
1. To prepare and serve meals within the Centre for clients (lunch and dinner), including weekends. Meals for weekends will be pre-made and stored as per Safe Food Handling guidelines for storage, freezing, thawing and reheating.

2. To develop a menu in advance (up to one month) that incorporates a variety of food types and ensures meals comply with the recommended guidelines of the Canada Food Guide.

3. To accommodate client dietary requirements including allergies, sensitivities, illness, cultural considerations, religion and medical. Input from clients will be requested on ways to accommodate their needs.

4. To prepare baking as time permits, and to leave food preparation instructions for midnight/weekend shifts as applicable.

5. To ensure all food storage, kitchen areas and food contact surfaces are clean at all times as per standards, with the assistance of clients and midnight/weekend staff.

6. To prepare food purchase lists and complete purchasing on a regular basis, ensuring a standard supply and variety of food is available at all times within the assigned budget and as per the menu.

7. To ensure the kitchen and food storage areas are organized and items/equipment are always available to staff.

8. To assist in orientating new staff on kitchen and food preparation procedures and practices.

9. To ensure all staff have access to information on health standards and safe food handling within the kitchen for reference.

10. To complete required paperwork and follow procedures for purchasing, orders and supplies.

11. To complete and maintain inventory of all food, storage, pantry supplies and cleaning.

12. To supervise clients who participate or are assigned kitchen/meal responsibilities as part of their residency.

13. To participate in all required training including, but not limited to Safe Food Handling and WHMIS.

14. Demonstrated ability to work independently with mínimal supervision, and collaboratively as part of a team.

15. Ability to establish workload priorities in a dynamic and rapidly changing environment.

16. Demonstrated ability to establish therapeutic rapport and proven cultural competence and ability to work effectively with diversity.

**Qualifications**:
1. Diploma or certificate in food services preferred; high school diploma required.

2. Must have current Safe Food Handling certification.

3. Knowledge and training of food handling, meal preparation, and sanitation required.

4. Ability to lift items weighing up to 40 pounds, to stand throughout the day, to bend, twist, and work in areas of fluctuating temperatures in a kitchen environment

5. At least one (1) year of experience as cook preparing meals for up to 40 people in a residential setting preferred

6. Ability to work independently, establish priorities, and multi-task.

7. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively and interact professionally with a diverse, multi-cultural & interdisciplinary team and client group.

**Conditions of Employment**:

2. Ability to work flexible hours as required to meet the operational needs of the program

3. Must have a valid Standard First Aid/CPR Certificate or be willing to obtain one.

**Job Types**: Full-time, Permanent

**Salary**: $18.00 per hour

COVID-19 considerations:
Staff, residents and visitors are required to wear medical grade masks while on-site, complete regular rapid Covid screening tests and complete screening questionnaire before each shift. All PPE and testing supplies provided by employer.

**Experience**:

- cooking: 1 year (preferred)

Licence/Certification:

- Food Safe, SafeCheck, Food Handler or equivalent (required)
- Driving Licence & proof of insurance (required)
