The Thrift Store Clerk provides friendly, courteous service to customers, sorts incoming products and assists the Store Manager in the maintenance of all store operations.
This position reports to the Store Manager however they may provide support and/or receive work assignments from other Management staff.
**Service Responsibilities**:
- To promote a friendly and courteous environment and service to customers.
- To contribute to meeting store sales budgets by maintaining customer standards.
- To process donations received, unloading, lifting, sorting and pricing items as per store policy.
- To replenish inventory levels based on the direction of the store manager.
- To be responsible for opening and closing of the store while on shift and take on responsibilities for all duties of the shift.
- To be responsible for the effective and efficient management and the accurate completion of all customer transactions including the handling of cash, VISA, debit, etc.
- Ensure the proper and accurate recording of all daily sales.
- To implement store layout plans and window displays that are tasteful and attractive to customers.
- Ensure the general upkeep, cleanliness and maintenance of the store, storage area, washrooms, staff lunchroom and main office areas
- Contribute to the safety of all staff and customers by assisting with snow removal, clearing of fire exits and ensuring that there are no obstacles left inside or outside the store.
- Other duties as assigned by the Store Manager, Program Manager or Executive Director

- To engage in annualized performance appraisal with the Store Manager.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures. Reporting any issues or concerns to your Health & Safety representative or the Joint Health & Safety Committee.
- Participate in ongoing professional development and training as required.
- To complete all required record-keeping and documentation tasks as outlined in the Service Responsibilities.
- To demonstrate understanding of agency policy, procedures and philosophy.
- To be responsible and uphold the professional development as well as to participate in professional development activities as deemed appropriate by the Store Manager.
- To function as a responsible member of the team by attitude, confidentiality, reliability and performance.
- Responsible to maintain professional integrity and honesty in the workplace and to report any observed infractions of the policy manual to either the Store Manager or the Executive Director.This Position Description will be reviewed by the employee and supervisor on a regular basis. Amendments can be made at any time at the discretion of the employer.
**Qualifications**:
Normal location of work is the Caledonia Thrift Store, 322 Argyle Street South, Unit #8, Caledonia, ON however can also include other locations for training, as required.
- **Minimum completion of Public School with completion of high school preferred.**:
- A minimum of one (1) year of cashier/retail experience.
- Experience with life skills and working with individuals with special needs an asset.
- Computer experience including MS Office.
- Current First Aid & Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation with Defibrillation training is required. (must be verified with copy of certificate).
- Ability to work cooperatively in a team setting.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Self-motivated and disciplined.
- Ability to physically stand and/or walk for long periods of time as well as the ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 15 kg.
- Provide an original copy of a Criminal Records Check (CRC) with vulnerable sector screening secured through either the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment; Note: A satisfactory criminal background check is required.
- Support for and commitment to the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada.
