**Job Title**: Grounds maintenance
**Main Tasks**: Grounds maintenance, lawn care, horticulture, general clean up
**Reports To**: Maintenance Manager / Executive Director
**Workdays**: 5 Day work week. Weekday / weekend rotation
**Hours**: 40/h weekly (one-week mornings / one-week evenings rotation)
**Work Term**: Seasonal

**Position Summary**:
The Cowichan Sportsplex is seeking a seasonal maintenance worker who would be part of the team responsible for the cultivation and care of the landscaping and grounds for the 26-acre facility. Day to day tasks of: Mowing grass, pulling weeds, daily garbage collection and performing routine maintenance around the facility. Primarily an outdoor working environment with some indoor janitorial and building maintenance required.

**Duties & Responsibilities**:
**General Tasks**:

- Perform grounds keeping and building maintenance duties
- Mow lawns / fields using a riding lawnmower
- Trim and edge around walks, flower beds, and walls
- Landscaping of grass, shrubs and bushes
- Daily garbage collection and disposal
- Sweep walkway of leaves and debris
- Shovel snow from walkways and spread de-ice to keep people from falling
- Cut down tree limbs / branches that are posing a danger
- Perform minor repairs and routine maintenance procedures on utilized equipment
- Rake, mulch, and prune the grounds as required
- Install rock, cement, lighting, water, and furniture, occasionally required
- Water plants and grass as needed

**Required Skills / Equipment & Machinery Experience**:

- Suggested 1 year in related field to grounds maintenance or landscaping
- Horticulture skills in plant, shrub, natural and artificial turf maintenance
- Some janitorial experience
- Basic mechanical knowledge; able to inspect equipment for issues and minor repairs
- Basic carpentry skills or aptitude
- An eye for detail and an ability to self-motivate when working alone
- Basic understanding of irrigation systems, maintaining, and operating
- Willingness to have a criminal records check
- Steel toed or composite work boots or work shoes
- Primarily outdoors with indoor janitorial and building maintenance
- Ability to operate manual transmission transport vehicle, hydro static drive tractor with front end loader, zero turn rotary lawn mower, various tow behind aeration equipment
- Ability to overate small engine equipment such as an edger, backpack blower, weed trimmers, walk behind mower and turf vacuum.
- Drivers abstract and valid drivers’ license
- Preferably a non-smoker as we promote a healthy environment

**Compensation / Terms**:
The position is set at an hourly rate of $20/h. There will be a two week ‘probationary period’ from the date of hire when a meeting will take place between maintenance manager and executive director to discuss progress moving forward.
