**General Summary**:
The BC Summer Reading Club (SRC) is a free literacy program designed to engage school-aged children, ages 5-14, with libraries and reading, throughout the summer. The Summer Reading Club Assistant supports the development and facilitation of this program and acts as the liaison between participating families and children and the library, championing literacy throughout the summer months. The Summer Reading Club Assistant will bring their unique interests and talents to the position and hone their project planning, program development, and communication skills.
The Summer Reading Club Assistant will also have the opportunity to work alongside our staff who have expertise in many areas of library-work and to obtain and develop skills including collection development, readers’ advisory, excellent customer service, knowledge of our ILS and catalogue, high caliber program development, outreach and community-building, and communication.
- be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period
- be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
- have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
**Key Responsibilities**:
- Collaborate with programs team to plan and promote an 8-week summer reading program for elementary school-aged children based on this year’s “Colour Your Summer” theme
- Perform outreach by visiting schools and community groups in Squamish to generate enthusiasm for participation
- Work in conjunction with the Children’s Programming Specialist to develop and plan engaging events through the summer
- Work with programs team and Marketing & Communications Specialist to promote the program and ensure that details are communicated clearly with the public
- Create and deliver thorough communication via weekly newsletter updates to participants through Constant Contact, staff newsletter updates, and contributing to social media content
- Facilitate weekly programs and events, delivering excellent service to the public
- Plan and host a final awards ceremony for all the families and children who have participated throughout the summer
- Act as champion of the library, its collection, and literacy of all kinds
- Support families with reader's advisory, gaining a specialized and in-depth knowledge of our collection and library resources
**Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities**:
- Experience working with children preferred
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and take initiative
- Team player
- Interest in children’s literature a plus
- Comfort with public speaking
- Excellent time management
- Must be able to undertake an RCMP Criminal Record Check
