**ABOUT THE ROLE**:
Reporting to the Director, the Chemist works in a fast-paced, collaborative environment with other chemists, engineers, and the leadership of RMSC Research & Development team, as well as other groups including Product Development, Production, Quality Assurance, Marketing, Finance and Sales.

**RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Keep abreast of scientific literature, cosmetic raw materials technology, processing methodology and marketing trends required to develop innovative cosmetics within the determined timeframe.
- Follow the project from concept inception and development through manufacturing.
- Develop new robust cosmetic (skincare, haircare, bath products, soap, butter) formulations meeting Marketing’s specifications and timelines as indicated by a Project Brief through bench experimentation.
- Source, evaluate and approve new and/or alternate raw and packaging materials.
- Reformulate and/or improve existing formulas through bench trials.
- Prepare laboratory batches or assist technician(s) /co-op students in preparing as needed for stability sampling, safety testing, preservative efficacy testing, claim/clinical testing, and marketing evaluation.
- Conduct appropriate stability/compatibility testing to ensure formula and/or formula/package robustness.
- Perform a variety of laboratory tests on materials and finished products to determine chemical and physical properties.
- Maintain accurate records of all formula development, physical testing, and specifications as per NHP/GMP/GLP requirements.
- Create and review technical documents to support developmental projects (i.e. Ingredient INCI Statements, Specifications, Content Disclosures, Formula Costs, Manufacturing Batch Sheets, etc.).
- Develop robust manufacturing processes for new products in conjunction with the processing team.
- Active participation in pilot plant/scale-up activities, as well as collaboration with third-party manufacturers.
- Support manufacturing/compounding in all product introductions. Serve as a technical advisor to Manufacturing and QC as needed.
- Develop specifications and standards for new and/or reformulated products, ensuring product quality.
- Develop and use testing specifications, including identifying appropriate, current analytical techniques, for the laboratory, encompassing pre and post-production phases of testing.
- Liaising with the Manager of Product Innovation & Communication on projects
- Other duties as assigned by the Head of Research

**QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS**
- BSc Chemistry/Biochemistry/ Pharmacy
- 2-5 Years of Experience in the formulation of a Cosmetic product and R&D position
- Experience and successful track record in the design and development of various types of advanced cosmetic formulations
- Experience in formulating a wide range of active ingredients of natural products, and synthetics is strongly preferred
- Experience in vacuum emulsifying mixers, various soap reactors, RO water plants, powder mixers, paste mixers, distillation, solvent extraction, and basic industrial microbiology.
- In depth knowledge in Health Canada cosmetic regulations is an asset
- Ability to work across science and engineering disciplines

- Excellent analytical, organizational, and multi-tasking skills
- Project management, collaborative, and technical leadership skills
