BASIC FUNCTION:
The primary function of this position is to be a driving force in the ultracold neutron (UCN) physics program at TRIUMF, both in hardware, simulation and analysis. The current focus is on constructing and commissioning of the next generation UCN source at TRIUMF and developing, constructing and commissioning the experiment to search for the electric dipole moment of the neutron (nEDM). Beyond that, the UCN source will become a user facility with two experimental ports. The position requires the incumbent to represent and promote TRIUMF through the research program via international collaborations, publications, conferences, committees and forums. The position also provides an opportunity for the incumbent to support their own research activities through research grants obtained from funding agencies in Canada.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
The position reports to the Head of the Particle Physics Department, and will work closely with the UCN group at TRIUMF and the TUCAN collaboration. Internal contacts include interaction with other Scientists at TRIUMF, Engineers, technical staff, Associate Laboratory Directors and Management team members, as well as all members of Particle Physics Department and the Physical Science Division. Additional contacts include the collaborators from Canadian, and other international Universities and Institutions. All relationships are characterized by professionalism, respect and Competence.

Training of highly-qualified personnel (HQP) such as undergraduate and graduate students and post-docs is a key component of the position.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent
- provides intellectual leadership in TRIUMF’s scientific program and UCN physics as a Board Appointed Employee (BAE) research scientist,
- works collaboratively with the UCN leadership team to accomplish the project's objectives/milestones,
- interacts with the international and Canadian community to foster further collaboration,
- supports and expands the UCN program,
- participates in the training of undergraduate, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows and others,
- carries out research that enables the division to deliver on its objectives along with the priorities of its program of work,
- actively participates in the strategic planning process of the division to define the science goals and strategies of the division,
- contributes to the division and the laboratory by filling various service functions,
- ensures that the safety and quality standards are consistent with the TRIUMF standard operating procedures,
- interacts with professional organizations of scientists using the TRIUMF facilities,

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
The position is expected to supervise NSERC grant funded research associates, postdoctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate students and technical staff as required.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Critical scientific thought and effective experimental strategy are necessary as the program grows to maintain the status of TRIUMF as a national centre of excellence in Canada and a recognized site of high-calibre research on the international stage. Effective problem solving is required for the decisions and issues encountered day-to-day. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential requirements to be effective in the role. The incumbent is expected to have excellent relationship building skills, demonstrated leadership qualities and the ability to delegate.

NUCLEAR ENERGY WORKER:
The position requires the incumbent to be trained as a NEW.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:
The incumbent must have PhD in experimental subatomic physics and several years of post-doctoral experience.
