New employees must provide documentation/proof of full COVID-19 vaccination status, a 2-step TB screening, as well as proof of immunity to measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella (chickenpox) prior to their start date at St. Mary’s General Hospital. Staff will require clearance from Employee Health and Wellness before they are able to begin any position within SMGH.

**Position Summary**:
The Therapy Assistant aids Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists in helping patients recovering from surgery, illnesses, and injuries to manage pain and to regain movement. The Therapy Assistant is involved with implementing patient treatment interventions as outlined by the supervising Therapist. The Therapy Assistant helps promote the health of patients by assisting patients to maintain and restore function, and develop skills for participation in daily activities.

**Position Requirements**:

- Graduate of an approved Physiotherapy/Occupational Therapy Assistant college program.
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Certification.
- Knowledge of, and ability to demonstrate corporate core competencies including
- customer service, communication, team work, initiative/self-management and
- accountability, and flexibility/adaptability.
- Employee must demonstrate basic computer skills
- Effective communication and organizational skills
- Commitment to maintain and promote healthy working relationships
- Ability to work with diverse patients and interdisciplinary staff populations.
- Demonstrated ability to use patient handling equipment safely and effectively.
- Demonstrated physical stamina to assist in the mobilization, transfer and/or positioning of patients
- Must be capable of repetitive bending and lifting and be able to stand and walk for a major part of the day.
- Demonstrated skills in the areas of organization, communication, and interpersonal relations.

**Preferred Requirements**:

- Acute Care hospital experience
- Recent practice in therapy
- Familiarity with electronic documentation system
