- BDC recently completed a strategic review - setting a new ambition for the impact the bank wants to have on Canada and its entrepreneurs in the years ahead. - BDC is looking for a passionate, committed environment and cleantech expert to join the Sustainability and Diversity team, to provide insights on environment-specific issues including policy issues. BDC’s Sustainability and Diversity department is responsible for strategy, oversight, and program development for all facets of BDC’s sustainability and ESG programs, including the bank’s renewed and enhanced focus on the environment. The Sustainability and Diversity team works with all business and operational units across the organization to fulfill its mandate, ultimately with the goal of helping Canada meet its climate targets and supporting Canada’s global sustainability leadership.
- POSITION OVERVIEW
- The purpose of this role is to support the Sustainability and Diversity team in providing environmentally related expertise to BDC’s stakeholders, as well as assisting with the implementation of BDC’s Environment Mission.
- In the first 24 months of the Environmental Specialist’s mandate, the employee will be part of a multi-disciplinary agile team working to deliver results in two areas:
- To inspire, educate, and spur SMEs on climate action by building a one-stop-shop Sustainability Action Center that is one of the world’s most robust sustainability awareness and education resources, and-
- To inject capital to support Canada’s decarbonization pathway for all entrepreneurs and invest into the next generation of clean technologies and projects by building a market-leading direct decarbonization loan product.- The agile Environment Mission team will explore a variety of partnerships, products, and distribution approaches to determine the most effective way to jolt demand and support Canada’s SMEs on their climate journeys - helping abate the 30-40% of emissions directly attributable to SMEs.
- CHALLENGES TO BE MET
- Responsibilities include:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the challenges (financial, operational and mindset) facing SMEs during this journey-
- Understand the tools and technologies available for SMEs to reduce energy, decarbonize and effectively prepare for a green energy transitionKeep apprised of ecosystem changes (federal and international) and how they may change SMEs behaviours and motivations when it comes to the energy transition-
- Be an active contributor to Agile projects, by continuously reviewing the business needs, refining priorities, outlining milestones and deliverables, focusing on continuous improvement and identifying opportunities and risks based on evolving needs-
- Engage with clients and partners to understand their needs and propose solutions that contribute to BDC’s purpose-
- Support the Lead Impact and partners in BDC in developing and disseminating environmental information throughout BDC and externally where appropriate-
- When requested by Account managers, advise BDC clients and prospects on management of environmental issues to ensure stable financing and to protect client interests-
- Articulate SMEs’ role in Canada transitioning to a net zero economy in a method that resonates with SMEs and stakeholders- WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR- A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in environmental science, engineering, economics or a related field-
