Reporting to the Site Supervisor, the Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for operating various types of heavy machinery used in construction, excavation, and site preparation. This role ensures that work is performed safely, accurately, and efficiently. Operators are expected to inspect equipment daily, follow operational and safety protocols, and assist in general labor tasks as needed.

**Duties and Responsibilities**:
**1. Heavy Machinery Operation and Maintenance**

1.1. Safety operate various types of heavy civil equipment including excavators, dozers, loaders, scrapers, graders, rollers and articulated trucks.

1.2. Use GPS or laser-guided systems for grading, trenching or excavation, when required.

1.3. Performing daily inspections of equipment, including fluids, controls, and components, to ensure functionality and reliability.

1.4. Addressing minor mechanical issues, changing attachments, and calibrating equipment as needed to meet project requirements.

1.5. Report malfunctions or required repairs to Site Supervisor.

1.6. Cleaning and storing equipment at the end of each shift, performing routine maintenance, and submitting accurate work logs and reports.

1.7. Keep equipment clean and in good working condition.

1.8. Operate with attention to erosion control, dust suppression and spill prevention.

1.9. Comply with environmental permits and relevant construction regulations.

1.10. Load and unload materials such as gravel, fill or demolition debris.

1.11. Ensure loads are secure and transported in accordance with safety standards.

1.12. Operate different types of equipment, as needed, based on project scope or crew demands.

1.13. Work in various weather and terrain conditions typical to heavy civil projects.

**2. Site Preparation**

2.1. Perform rough and find grading, trenching, excavation and backfilling for utilities, roadways and structures.

2.2. Move and place large volumes of earth, aggregate, and other materials according to engineered plans.

2.3. Read and interpret construction drawings, grade stakes, and layout markings to guide equipment operation.

2.4. Ensure alignment with engineered grades, slopes, and drainage requirements.

**3. Safety Compliance**

3.1. Follow all site safety rules and company policies to prevent accidents and equipment damage.

3.2. Use personal protective equipment (PPE) and participate in toolbox talks and safety briefings.

3.3. Maintain situational awareness around underground utilities and active site hazards.

**4. Other (5%)**

4.1. Works in a safe manner and ensures department operations are carried out in a safe manner in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, associated regulations, Mistral Group of Companies policies, procedures, and other associated legislation.

4.2. Other related duties, as assigned.

**Education**
- Secondary school diploma or equivalent.

**License, Registration and Training**
- Valid and unrestricted Class “G” driver’s license with “Z” endorsement and access to reliable transportation.

**Experience**
- Three (3) to five (5) years work experience operating heavy construction and/or utility equipment (front-end loaders, backhoes, bulldozers, excavators, etc.).
- Previous experience in general maintenance and heavy construction.

**Knowledge, Skills and Abilities**
- Understanding of construction site operations and safety protocols.
- Knowledgeable of heavy equipment capabilities, limitations and maintenance requirements.
- Strong understanding of safety protocols and a proactive approach to hazard prevention.
- Familiarity with site grading, excavation methods and soil conditions.
- Proficient in operating various heavy equipment types with precision.
- Strong problem solving and mechanical skills.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
- Clear and effective communication skills for collaborating with team members and supervisors.
- Basic math skills for measuring, grading and material estimation.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, diagrams and grade stakes.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and terrain conditions.

A combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
