**Position Description**:

- We are recruiting a Research Associate (RA) for an exciting opportunity at the Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning at the Hospital for Sick Children to carry out research_ study operations that will support world-class fundamental and pre-clinical research at SickKids._ The RA will work closely with the Principal Investigator to_ help to lead synthetic biology projects on antimicrobial resistance, machine learning-based protein design, and engineered synthetic biotics._

**_ Responsibilities:_**
- _engineer the probiotic yeast Saccharomyces boulardii, including design of expression vectors and antibody/nanobody sequences, expression and secretion of antibody fragments and nanobodies, and construction of strains that neutralize cytokine and bacterial pathogen targets for treatment of inflammatory bowel disease and other GI disorders; work with collaborators to test the technology in pre-clinical animal models_
- _develop yeast surface display methods to produce antigens on the cell surface of S. boulardii for production of low-cost oral vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 and influenza; work with collaborators to test the technology in pre-clinical virus infection models_
- _engineer S. boulardii for production of small therapeutic molecules in the GI tract, including polyamines and antibiotic biosynthesis pathways_
- _use yeast-based expression technology and machine learning to design and produce novel engineered antibodies, nanobodies and miniproteins; ; this work will be also carried out in close collaboration with ML experts _
- _develop novel technologies for the production of novel synthetic natural products using combinatorial enzyme biosynthesis to produce novel compounds in yeast, which are then screened in high-throughput assay for antibiotic activity against M. tuberculosis and other critical global pathogens_
- _characterize new genes implicated in the control of division using yeast as a model organism_
- _lead conceptualization of research questions and data acquisition strategies in the fields of synthetic biology and synthetic biotics_
- _Work closely with an extensive team within the research group and external collaborators_
- _Trains and supervise graduate students and postdoctoral fellows_

**_ Qualifications:_**
- _PhD degree in molecular biology with extensive expertise in specific areas of biomedical research including systems biology, cell and protein engineering, chemical biology and drug discovery_
- _Research experience in a higher education setting that includes:_
- _A conceptual understanding of and practical experience in synthetic biology, gene synthesis, synthetic biotics, natural product biosynthesis, and protein design_
- _Use of standard software tools for gene design and molecular cloning_
- _An understanding of machine learning methods as applied to bioactive peptide and protein design_
- _A strong knowledge of the general field of synthetic biology, particularly synthetic biotics, including the patent literature_
- _Demonstrated track record in timely delivery of critical results and meeting acute deadlines _
- _Expertise in multiple yeast and bacterial model organism systens_
- _Expertise in cell-based assay design and implementation of large-scale screens with genetically-encoded libraries_
- _Expertise in CRISPR-based gene editing_
- _Extensive record in dissemination of research findings through presentations at international conferences, publications, and workshops_
- _Track record of participation in large multi-national collaborations_
- _Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written_
- _Ability to function independently in supervision of dedicated sub-teams within a larger research group_
- _Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously_
- _Ability to work well in a team environment and demonstrate a strong work ethic and initiative_
