About Our Opportunity:
Directions Youth Services is a division of Family Services of Greater Vancouver (FSGV), which for more than 90 years has provided a variety of essential resources for children, families, and individuals in the Greater Vancouver community. We believe in the resiliency of Vancouver’s youth who are at-risk, homeless, and street-involved. We assist youth under the age of 25 to get counselling for trauma, mental health, or substance issues. Our teams strive to create spaces and build connections with youth who are facing challenges of street life, substance use, mental health concerns, and disconnection from their communities. Directions inclusive programs of shelter and drop-in, safe houses, and other unique programs are committed to being a community leader in harm reduction work and fostering low-barrier spaces where all youth are welcome.

Street Youth Job Action (SYJA) is a low-barrier, pre-employment, same-day work and peer engagement program for marginalized, homeless, and at risk young people aged 16-24. The SYJA program operates Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:00-4:00 PM. The SYJA Support Worker will support participants by identifying their unique barriers to employment and help develop basic life and job readiness skills. The SYJA Support Worker will travel on foot throughout the day to provide outreach support and supervision to “street youth crews” on designated street cleaning routes (Downtown Core, including Downtown South and the West End) and assist youth in the navigation of services as they transition to accessing safer lifestyles. This is a 35 hr/week position that reports to the Program Manager - Specialized Youth Supports.

**Salary**: Grade 7 Step 1 - $25.07 per hour

**Location**: Directions Youth Services, 1138 Burrard Street.

What do you need to succeed?

**Education, Training, Experience**
- Grade 12 plus post-secondary training in a related field and
- 1 year related experience with emphasis on homelessness, mental health, addictions, and/or social service work or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
- Current First Aid, Food Safe Level 1, and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certificates are an asset

**Knowledge, Skills, Abilities**
- Ability to engage in client-centered change by establishing respectful relationships and increasing client motivation for positive change, and the ability to observe and recognize change in clients
- Knowledge of the systematic issues that affect low-income and marginalized people and relevant community, social, and health resources, and government services and systems
- Knowledge of low barrier resources, harm reduction model, adolescent development, alcohol and drug use issues, mental health issues, sexually exploited youth, and street-involved activities

**Additional Requirements**
- Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check
