- **JOB TITLE**_: Occupational Health and Safety Specialist
- **IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR**_: Operations Manager
- **BASIC FUNCTION**_: The Occupational Health and Safety Specialist helps to identify workplace hazards and makes recommendations to the employer, provide health and safety training to employees, conduct safety seminars to promote a safety culture, and conduct job site inspections to ensure safety regulations under the OHSAare met.**RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Conduct workplace and job site inspections.
- Verify loading conditions and conduct pre-inspections of job sties.
- Assist in identifying workplace hazards and making recommendations to the employer.
- Be present to assist the worker in the investigation of work refusals.
- May inspect the workplace where a critical injury has occurred and report findings to the MOL.
- Provide feedback on the workplace violence risk assessment.
- Ensure Safety Data Sheets are up to date and in compliance with all regulations.
- Obtain information about hazards.
- Obtain information about health and safety-related tests (prior to and during testing).
- Request information from WSIB about the company’s injury claims history.
- Accompany a MOL Inspector during a site visit, when requested.
- Provide health and safety training to employees.
- Provide training on-site and off-site for proper material handling and delivery standards.
- Conduct health and safety seminars to promote a workplace safety culture and prevent workplace incidents.
- Lead the Joint Health and Safety Committee and representatives to ensure a safe working environment.
- Additional tasks that may be required or requested.
- One (1) mandatory Saturday every year for inventory (Last weekend of July before Civic Holiday weekend).
- **EDUCATION**_: _ College or University Degree in occupational health and safety or in a related scientific or technical field.
- **EXPERIENCE**:_3-5 years’ experience in the construction industry or industrial sector with an emphasis on safety duties and responsibilities.
- **SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES**:_
- Knowledge of federal, provincial and local safety regulations, protocols, and/or procedures.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to convey safety instructions to employees and managers.
- Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
- Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports using various computer programs.
- Ability to develop, implement, and enforce safety programs and protocols.
- Strong attention to detail to both recognize and adhere to specific safety standards and government regulations.
- Skilled in performing safety inspections and ensuring compliance with _OHSA_ safety standards.
- Ability to investigate and analyze information and draw conclusions.
- Required to wear Personal Protective Equipment as prescribed in designated areas.
- Problem solving skills to find solutions to unsafe working conditions and environmental concerns in the workplace.
- **PHYSICAL DEMANDS**:_
- Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work such as heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling of objects from 50-100 lbs.
- Must be able to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, with manual dexterity and see acute depth perception and field of vision.
- **ENVIRONMENTAL AND PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS**:_
- The work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
- Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
- Work with technical and mechanical equipment daily.
- **LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION**:_
- Valid G driver’s license with a clean driver abstract and insurable at a regular rate by the insurers of the employer.
- WHMIS
- Working at Heights certification
- Emergency First Aid certification
- Certified Safety Professional an asset
- Train the Trainer certifications an asset
- JHSC certification an asset
- Forklift certification an asset

**Salary**: $60,000.00-$75,000.00 per year
