The Role
Under the direction of the Manitoba Construction Manager, the Fusing Technician will be responsible for the safe, precise and high-quality fusion of polyethylene distribution piping systems for gas main systems and service installations, in compliance with utility standards, safety regulations and project specifications.
A Day in the Life
Whether it’s a new gas main system or a service install, Fusing is hands-on, physical work with big responsibility: keeping the gas infrastructure safe, reliable, and built to last. Your duties will include:
Prepare, align, and join polyethylene pipe segments to create leak-free connections critical for safe gas delivery using hydraulic butt, electrofusion, sidewall and socket fusion
Read and interpret job plans, blueprints, and fusion procedures to ensure proper pipe installation.
Inspect pipe and fittings for defects prior to fusion and ensure proper cleaning, alignment, and temperature control during the fusion process.
Operate and maintain fusion equipment, including facing tools, heating plates, and clamps.
Conduct pressure testing, leak detection, and visual inspections to verify the integrity of fused joints.
Ensure all fusions are properly documented for quality control and utility compliance standards.
Work safely around live gas systems and follow strict adherence to safety protocols, including lockout/tagout, PPE use, and excavation best practices.
Coordinate with supervisors and other crew members to ensure timely project completion and alignment with safety and quality objectives.
Load, transport, and handle pipe, fittings, and fusion equipment
Maintain a clean and organized job site and assist with general labor and construction related duties as needed.
Stay current with the required certifications and participate in ongoing safety and technical training.
What Success Looks Like
The Fusing Technician contributes to safe and efficient gas system installations that meet utility and regulatory standards. Your success is measured by five key areas:
**Safety Compliance**: Strictly follow safety protocols, resulting in zero safety violations or incidents. Maintains awareness of surroundings and work safely in high-risk environments, including around live gas lines.
**Documentation & Traceability**: Accurately completes all required fusion records, pressure test logs, and related documentation to support quality assurance and regulatory requirements.
**Team Collaboration**: Work effectively with field crews, supervisors, inspectors, and other stakeholders. Communicates clearly and contributes to a positive team environment.
