Technician 2 - Drafting and Geographic Information

Under the general supervision of the Technologist Gr 3 and / or the Geomatics and Land Information Services Administrator, the Technician 2 -Drafting and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) - Land Information Systems (LIS), carries out complex drafting, mapping, graphic presentation assignments, and analysis and maintenance of spatial data using computer aided mapping and GIS software. Performs maintenance and updating of databases related to land records as well as interprets and plots legal descriptions and other related duties consistent with the classification. This position also provides internal staff and the public with cartographic products and other land related information.
**As the **_Technician 2 -Drafting and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) - Land Information Systems (LIS),_** **you will:
- Perform a variety of highly skilled drafting using state of the art computer drafting and mapping software(s) such as CAD, GIS, GeoMedia Professional, and MicroSurvey, etc. to meet the cartographic needs of the Real Estate Division, Geomatics Branch, Permits and Waterways Branches, professional consultants as well as the general public.
- Prepare custom map products and special graphic products such as: sketches for easements and agreements, survey certificates, building and site location plans, complex legal survey plans for registration at the Land Titles Office, base maps and wall maps, and miscellaneous plans.
- Research, compile and correlate data from various sources including: engineering notes, atlas sheets, registered plans, survey certificates, engineering drawings, assessment rolls, Certificates of Title.
- Update digital map database components including area characterization boundary database, property addressing database and zoning boundaries.
- Provide the Department, City staff and the general public with cartographic products and other land-related information available through the use of GeoMedia Professional and the AMANDA system.
- Activate queries to generate lists of data or to display results on maps.
- Perform maintenance and updating of databases related to land records such as the Property Address System, City Land Inventory, Base Map, Zoning, and AMANDA System and performs other related duties consistent with classification.
- Compile data from permits, titles, drawings, proposed plans, zoning by-laws and other City records.
- Liaise with Departmental staff in the timely updating of records to accommodate building permits, subdivision approvals, real estate transactions and other Departmental approval processes.
- Interpret and plot legal descriptions and performs mathematical computations.
- Perform mathematical calculations, using the principles of geometry and trigonometry, related to land boundaries and areas to determine missing distances, angles, closures and areas from information shown on registered plans or engineering drawings.
- Identify ownership boundaries and ensures accuracy of final ownership map(s).
**Your education and qualifications include**:
- Nine (9) Community College courses; OR equivalent program of study from another educational institute including courses in computer-aided drafting, principles of GIS, managing databases and survey computations; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Minimum three (3) years’ experience related to Geomatics and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) activities.
- Ability to prepare and interpret engineering notes and sketches, and transfer the information to neat workable drawings or computer databases using a variety of tools and software.
- Ability to perform basic analysis of data using GIS principles and software, and to prepare graphic reports of the results.
- Knowledge of survey mathematics and the ability to carry out routine survey computations.
- Proficiency in the use of GeoMedia.
- Ability to layout and present land related information and map data to clearly communicate desired results.
- Ability to organize and efficiently carry out assignments and meet deadlines.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, legal plans, and technical drawings in order to prepare drawings, reports, presentations and update databases.
- Ability to carry out project work as directed and to prepare or complete required reports and records.
- Ability to understand and execute written instructions.
- Strong verbal communication skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
