**Employment Opportunity**: Youth Worker **Location**: Halifax, NS **Salary Range**: $24/hour **Employment Term**: Full-time (35 hours/week) **Reports to**: Early Years Navigator **General Description**: The Youth Worker will work with Indigenous youth, specifically youth at risk to provide culturally relevant programming including, land-based learning, cultural teachings, outings, workshops etc. This will be done in a group setting as well as one-on-one. The Youth Worker will work with other MNFC youth staff to collaborate on programs and events. The Youth Worker will work with different departments within the MNFC to create cultural experiences and provide support to children and youth attending pre-existing programming. This position requires a compassionate individual who enjoys interacting with children/ youth. The Youth Worker must be approachable and friendly, with a strong work ethic, a positive attitude and a passion for bringing people together and sharing culture. This job description will change as the workplace changes. **Key Responsibilities**: - Work collaboratively with youth by providing culturally relevant programming - Maintain a high level of confidentiality - Ensure the program delivery is congruent with the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre’s mission, vision and philosophy - Supporting youth in accessing appropriate services (health care, mental health, education) - Work with target age group: Indigenous youth, specifically youth at-risk. - Must demonstrate sensitivity, compassion, and a non-judgemental attitude, as well as initiative, self-direction and teamwork. - Create cultural programming for youth for both individual and group settings - Develop and deliver land-based learning opportunities and connect with other land-based learning programs - Manage and maintain documentation related to case notes, reporting, budget and program spending, and data base information - Ensure community are informed and well connected to the many existing programs of the Friendship Centre and will work to identify existing resources outside of the Centre. - Work in partnership with the Youth Programming Team and Jordan’s Principle to ensure access and understanding of existing programming with in the Urban Indigenous Community. - Must show an understanding of and appreciation for how the determinants of health impact families in the community and have knowledge in Indigenous ways of knowledge. - Prepare reports for the Early Years Navigator - Attend professional development opportunities as requested - May perform other related duties as assigned. **Qualifications & Experience;** - Education in Youth programming, Child & Youth, or a related field required - Experience in working/volunteering with young Indigenous children and families - Knowledge of a range of community resources relevant to families and the ability to connect families with these resources - **_Comprehensive understanding of traditional Indigenous teachings_**: - Ability and skills necessary to communicate respectfully with families with diverse Indigenous backgrounds such as: First Nations, Inuit and Metis - Good oral and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills. - Ability to establish and maintain personal/program boundaries, while providing supportive services - **_Reliable means of transportation (must own a working vehicle)_**: - **_Experience using Microsoft Office (word, excel, outlook, access, power point)_**: - **_Required Vulnerable Sector Check & Child Abuse Registrar must be provided prior to start of position_**: - *_Must be of Indigenous Ancestry, must self identify_ **Application Deadline: Open Until Filled** **_Disclaimer: The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this job.
