**Job Description**:
Salary Range: $32.59 - $37.26

The Medical Laboratory Assistant is an important member of the pathology / histology staff by assisting the needs of the Pathologists, Pathologist assistants and the Technologists. Performs duties related to specimen procurement and accessioning including cytology, frozen section, Intraoperative consult and lymphoma protocol. Tissue processor maintenance and solution change, tissue disposal, solution management, block / slide storage or retrieval, sending out specimens, maintaining reagent inventory, cassette printer maintenance, stocking supplies and setting up grossing stations.

Participation in quality assurance and quality improvement activities and compliance to departmental procedures and Accreditation, maintaining specimen collection equipment and following inventory control system. The Laboratory Assistant will ensure and follow health and safety procedures as per the Hospital guidelines and legal requirements, and participate in special projects as assigned. The physical demands of the role may include but are not limited to prolonged sitting, standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing and pulling. This position contributes to ensuring there is a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors.

**Skills and Qualifications**:

- MLA with certification from the MLPAO or CSMLS required
- Histology experience of at least 2 years is required
- Ability to perform all necessary morgue duties
- Good housekeeping skills
- Knowledge of safe work practices and quality systems required
- Familiar with accreditation standards, and other relevant regulatory requirements and legislations
- Experience performing pre-analytical functions such as sample sorting, receiving, accessioning and centrifugation for testing required
- Ability to function independently within a self-directed team environment
- Experience with Meditech laboratory module preferred
- Transportation Dangerous Goods (TDG) certification preferred
- Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal)
- Accuracy and attention to detail is required
- Demonstrated problem solving abilities
- Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis is required
- Other duties as assigned within the MLA scope of practice- The successful external applicant is required to provide the applicable criminal record check, as requested by Human Resources, in accordance with federal and provincial legislation. Valid criminal record checks are in original format and dated with two months from date of conditional offer from CMH._
